Devil Dog's first grow Progress

I think i get the idea now. Here is where I started, does this look okay?

You can't really tell from this pic. But like @Stone420 mentioned, i anchored the main stem and then pulled the middle part about 45 degrees to open up the side area. Then i pulled a couple random larger branches down a bit. I used zip ties but was gentle. after a few days i will need to pull different ways, correct?

@Steviestash that look very nice!

Great job! As each cola grows, I train it horizontally to keep the center open in a bowl style. Lots of light and air hits the main stem this way. During this phase of LST, I'll remove selected fan leaves to allow max light into the center. I don't go nuts removing foliage, but will take a couple of leaves a day that cant be tucked or bent out of the way.

At some point, I'll back off on the horizontal training and let her go vertical for cola development. I still adjust to keep light into the center, but not so much hard horizontal training as I did the first 5 or 6 weeks.

@Stone420 thanks for the info. I tried to emulate what you've done, but looks no where near as good as yours. I am assuming i need to remove a little foliage?

Great job, @DevilDog_0651. You have a good start to a darn fine LST job! Obviously you don't want to take too much foliage for a host of reasons, but its ok to take some selective leaves to keep your center stem open for air and light. If I can tuck leaves under I will opt for that vs removal, but sometimes it just works to remove the leaf. You may want to open her center a bit with a few leaves out of the way. A couple of her bud sites can be pulled down more which will also help you open her center.

Since we are training the canopy to lay flat, I am always concerned that we need some air flow under the canopy to prevent moisture related issues such as powdery mold. When she is a bit bigger, I'll remove most of the lower foliage in a lollypop format. This allows good airflow plus it lets the plant focus on top growth and not larf buds below.

Once she is trained horizontally, I'll let her reach upward and not tie down too much from that point - but keep selective leaves tucked or removed so all of your bud sites have light penetration.

You saw my pic as I finalized her horizontal training, now we let her grow tall and develop bud sites. The second pic is taken exactly one week after the first pic, and look how she is reaching up to the light. I maintain open bud sites as much as possible for light penetration and air flow. Some folks overlook airflow.....I have a fan under her canopy and one over the top to max the air she gets. I did a bit of manipulation after I took the pic when I saw a few leaves I needed to tuck under. Its always a work in progress.

One week later as she is reaching upward. What a difference one week makes - she is 5 weeks old today from emergence. Pistils are stacking up on her bud sites. I am constantly tucking and working to keep the sites open w/o taking too many leaves as she is stretching.

Man, thank you for all of that information and those pics. This really helps me out a lot!!! Mine will be 5 on friday lol

Great job, LST takes a slow and steady approach. Don't forget to update us with pics to document your success story. Other folks who want to learn LST will be getting good advice from your grow! Awesome job!

@Stone420 as requested, here is an update pic. Just before i snapped this pic, i removed the zip ties. Growth has seemed to slow a bit, but it is so much bigger than my other plant (different strain) so I am happy. I am hoping it starts to flower soon. It is a couple days shy of 4 weeks old from sprout. Honestly, how am I doing? Have some taco leaves in older leaves, and slight discoloration on old leaves. It is definitely a bush! Full as hell.

I am thinking maybe my light is too close and that's why the plant is not growing vertically?

Oh wow...she sure is a full plant and great job friend! Her new growth color seems nicely uniform and indicates good health. Great grow!!

It hurts me to do this since it seems we are damaging the plant - but I occasionally take a large fan leaf out of the way so light can penetrate her main stem. I see a leaf or two that I'd remove to open her center. Now that you have her trained horizontally, it helps to keep her center stem open for light penetration and lots of air flow. Good airflow is very important for her development as you well know from being a good grower.

I took several fan leaves off my plant this morning and it looks a bit naked right at first. BUT - this time tomorrow morning I wont be able to tell I've done a darn thing to defoliate selected leaves.

My LST goal at first was to keep her colas even height so the light would be even across her canopy. Now that is done, I'll remove foliage as often as needed - but not too much at a time. I really need to take out more tomorrow morning, but I do this slowly as she is building buds and I don't want to shock her too much at once.
