Before you go down that line, you have to define the "average" diy cob setup.
Are you using cheap and nasty driverless cobs, cheap and nasty "no name" cobs, or the likes of citizen, cree, samsung, etc, for you can easily get double the µmol/j (that's the equivalent of µmol/s per watt/s) from LED vs a 400w single ended 400w HPS with magnetic ballast (0.9 vs 2.0).
And what total wattage are you talking for you cannot compare a 50w cob to a 400w, or higher, HID.
Or are you going to sit there and say HID is more efficient than LED?
