Hi friends,

I‘m planning to change my lights and I need some help with it.

Set-up:
Tent 90cm x 90cm x 195cm
4 x 15 l Airpots soil/coco (always 2 adult plants, 40 days or older and 2 seedlings/plants younger than 30 days)
Good airflow
Temperature 25-28C (20-23C when lights off)
Humidity 40-50%

Currently I‘m using a Hans Panel 180w (160 lights / 20 ventilation). Seedlings are fine with 50cm distance to light (aprox. 250 umol), during flower with 30cm (aprox. 650 umol) to 25cm (aprox. 950 umol).

I‘m planning to buy 4 COBs (4 x 50w) Cree CXB3590 Type 3500K Glass. https://www.ledgrowshop.eu/cob-grow-kits/200w-cxb3590-cob-kits/
I think €365,- incl. shipping is a good deal.

What do you think about these COBs?

I try to spread canopy (topping, LST...), so I think that a COB with glass lens would be better than with reflector?

Would you use 1 COB for each plant or would you recommend an other configuration?

What distance to canopy should I choose in seedling and in flower stage?

All other additional information will be highly appreciated!

Thanks and happy growing,

El Gringo

I'm running the same heat sinks and make driver, and Citizen Clu048 12-12 3500k @50w ea. Just went from 4 to 9 in my 4X4. So 450w, 512 @ the wall. Am just into my first run with all the lights, but the 4 performed great for the area they covered. You'll probably get a little better energy use with the CREE chips... love the 3500k and the LED COB, my only thought is I may add far red emitters.

I start @ 24 inches and dimmed, and bring up the power over the first 3 weeks. Usually end 18-20" in flower. Am assuming running the 450 will be the same.

Crees are way over priced. Use that same money and get some 1818s or 1825s. The 1818s are better than the 3590s and the 1825s are insane. I would skip the 1212s and at least get 1812s if not bigger.

THEY'RE called KAAAAHBS Joe's dad's stuff

Don't use the glass lenses in your tent. The glass focuses the light down and are meant for high bay applications. I used to use the reflectors but no longer do. I use citizen 1818's at 75 watts, 4 cobs per 4 x 4 and it works really well. 1- 50 watt cob per plant is a good rule. I have my lights set at around 30 inches above seedlings and let them grow into the light. When they are around 12" from the lights, I'll raise them a bit.
Happy Growing!

Thanks a lot, bro!

u got any pics of ur tent and set up. cobs are very good once dialed into ur growroom. i run 1, 100w migro cob in a very small tent i think 90x90.so very similar to your size setup. cobs do the job for sure grow some great plants. happy growing every1;)

No pics at the moment. But there‘s nothing special or unusual in my „Secret Jardin DR90“ ... I‘m still running my panel .. COBs are ordered but not shipped.

I am a bit unsure about reflector vs. secondary 90´ lens vs. „naked“. I thought that using lenses would be a good idea .. you loose aprox. 10% through reflection and refraction but you raise intensity through bundling in a -conditioned by it- reduced footprint.

OPTIC LED from Canada published some detailed information about their product which is comparable to the COBs I‘ve ordered:

https://opticledgrowlights.com/products/optic-1-cree-cxb3590-132w-standalone-cob

They talk about a 60cm x 60cm footprint at 50cm distance from canopy in flower (2ft x 2ft @ 18‘‘).
In my tent COBs will have a distance of 40cm (16‘‘) to each other and 25cm (10‘‘) to the walls. So footprints will overlap really a lot between the 4 COBs and at 10‘‘ to the wall, there will be a big amount of light to be reflected to the outer parts of my plants. I don‘t plan to center each plant below each COB but create an more or less evenly illumination. A lens would raise light intensity considerably and would allow/force me to keep a higher distance to canopy which will raise light penetration.

So far my thoughts. ..... but maybe I am misled by too much different information found on too many sites. :backside:

I finally bought the lights and ... what can I say .... I am really impressed! The intensity is incredible. During the last 2 years I used different lights so I know what I am talking about.

First I used a Chinese LED panel 300W, then I switched to 2 Hans-panels 80w each, then a 180w Hans-panel and finally the new cobs.

Just to give you an idea about intensity:

Hans-panel 180w distance to ground in seedling stage: 20in
Cobs (with 90 degree lenses): 37in ... I started with 34in but had to raise them.

Using transparent cups during the first 8-9days, I also noticed a way better/stronger root growth of my little ones!

These lights are really awesome and it‘s fun to have the possibility to play with coverage and intensity/penetration.

Limited in space I hope to be able to use the 90 degree lenses from start to finish because they increase light penetration significantly! But with some training even larger strains should be fine ... (height max. 32in).

Happy growing!
