Hey, hej. You can do either. It's far more likely that you'll break the bulb by mishandling it than hanging it on wire or string. I believe (not 100%) they're designed to be hung without reflectors in a horizontal position but even if they're not, they can take their own weight no probs.

you could make a coupler to hold the base steady instead of the bulb itself. i was kinda concerned too about you putting something directly on the bulb. it could hold its own weight but a good bump could shatter it if your not careful.
