My first grow; an DP Auto Ultimate, has about a week to go before harvest. The buds are nice and fat, with a nice frosting of trichomes and continuing to put on weight. Most of the pistils are still white. Clearly not ready yet.

However...

It's Friday and I have no gear :-(. Would it be completely taboo and ill-advised to take a small sample from my plant, say a couple of joints, dry it out and smoke it?

:-D

If that's not the question that every first time grower asks then i don't know what is!!

Nah - how old is it?
I would take a "taster" (naughty!!) from the bottom lower developed buds that get less light.
You could pop it on your reflector if it gets warm - but that'll take like 6-12 hours.

You could pop it in the oven :) not too hot though! 140c Max for upto 30 minutes, but check every 10. I wrap mine loosely in foil, and then the edges will go a little crispy.

It wont be the same a properly dried smoke (it always tastes a little "creamy" to me) and if you hadn't have taken it, you would have more bud in the end (as it wil pacl on a little wieght)

Just don't go crazy snipping buds - you'll kick yourself later! :)

PMSL!

I'm reluctant to do it so it will be the only time. But if there's one thing I hate it's not having any smoke on a Friday!

The plant is about 73 days old now. There are plenty of small clumps at the bottom I could use. The main buds I'm leaving well alone. lol

Careful with the oven then - i recently saw someone bake the life outta their weed  .. you go steady! ^_^

Seriously though, I plan to put the small piece that I cut off right next to my laptop vent. It blows out warm air very gently. If I keep rotating the bud every 10 minutes it should be ready in an hour. I'm only talking about a piece the size of a marble, perhaps a bit bigger. :)

If you wanna do it that way, cut it down to small pieces or else it will still be damp in the middle.

Well, I clipped off a small nugget from around the base of the plant last night about 2 cm across. I noticed as soon as I removed it the smell became pungent and heavy. I chopped it up into small pieces and it was proper sticky. At this point it had a very fresh, cut grass like aroma, which personally I didn't like.

I let it dry out at room temperature and after about 3 hours it was dry enough to smoke. I was a bit unsure I'd get a buzz from it what with being so fresh and clearly not ready, but it didn't disappoint. The high crept up and really took hold, but without being too heavy. It was lovely and a much nicer high than stuff I've bought. :)

If this little experience has taught me anything though it's the importance of proper drying and curing, and I won't be cutting any corners here.
