Calmag and ppm in coco

I buffer my coco before planting to ensure the coco is ready. I don't do cal mag past seedling stage and my girls are loving the megacrop , sweet candy and I just started their pk boost.

How did you buffer the coco, just curious?

@Proph said I'm not sure where this thing about adding cal/mag through out a grow came from, lol.

This probably started with this guy Dr MJ Coco who says you need to use calmag at every feeding. I find some of this guys stuff suspect. IE: in his tome on mixing nutrients he says calmag must be mixed with your water first or it will mess up the rest of the added stuff. This seems reasonable since I learned in baking that sometimes you have to mix your ingredients in the order the recipe calls for or it just won't work. Bunch of science stuff involved here. But then he goes on to say that if your ppm is too high you should thin it down with water that has a full dose of calmag. Wait a minute, WHAT?

On my current grow I'm using Prescription Blend nutrients and they suggested I use it straight w/o any calmag. So far its going well but will soon be approaching the time period where I've started to have issues. Starting this post was an attempt to preempt the issue from happening or fix it b4 it goes too far

That's funny that you mention him. Let me actually start out by saying that I am in absolutely no means a know it all or have no room to grow or learn. I also, very much, respect everyone opinions. I at least try pretty hard too. But I have heard an interview with him where he gave some "interesting" advice and/or insight into lighting. I'm a lighting nerd. I hate to ever say someone was wrong, but it was pretty not right. That said, every one and I do mean every single person can, does and in my book is allowed to make mistakes, or speak incorrectly. I will never crusify someone for that as I hate that treatment for myself. But that leads me full circle to where I was when I first spoke up a bit ago here. The internet is full of the only way to do things. The only right way to do things and very toxic "correct always" people. I am in no way saying that he is this type of person. I have read and heard way more from him that I believe to be right on. I personally feel from years and years of outdoor photo growing, that environmental factors are so important and are the variable that makes sharing horticulture ideas so difficult. Now, if we were all sold the "lad in a box" we may be able to repeat what is out there on a more regular basis.... Shit, wake and bake got me rambling. Anyway, my two cents. Just thought it was funny as his name just came up over here on a similar situation. I will say really quickly before I bounce, that this community here has been great. I feel a genuine sense of giving a shit or something. Not a toxic place that I've seen yet. So thank you to this community for keeping it a place where people can actually ask questions and have actual discussions without fear of being ridiculed for not being born with the complete horticulture knowledge of the planet embedded into my brain. Hahaha.

@GeorgeCloney @Proph
So are you saying don't add calmag unless you start seeing an issue?
I would follow the suggested feed schedule of my nutrient line. When nutrient lines say that their products are suited for soil, coco and/or hydro, I assume they take the medium into consideration. Core B has good amount of calcium in it.. So does the Precusror. So just based on that, I wouldn't add anymore unless I see a deficiency starting. Think of it like this.. If you feed extra cal and mag, it would be impossible to tell if a cal or mag issue is caused by a lock out due to over feeding... In a lock out situation, adding more cal/mag is not the answer.. But when you DONT add extra cal mag during the grow, and you start seeing cal or mag issues, you automatically know it's not a cal or mag lock out due to over feeding. In that situation, adding more IS the answer.

Less is always more.. And the less you add, the easier the issues are to diagnose. It's a lot easier to add a little more calmag if needed, then it is to remove a little once there is too much. Calcium and magnesium are also mobile.. So a simple foliar spray could resolve cal/mag issues. There's no real reason to add more into the soil/medium if a problem did show up.

Got it and thanks for the info

My bad.. I thought you were using prescription blend! What nute line are you using? I'll look into its cal/mag contents!

Right now I am using Prescription Blend. I was using Green Planet GP3 and had issues with what looked like Manganese deficiency cause it started at the top and went down. It happened with 2 grows where everything went great until the last few weeks.
