I am making a grow closet 48"l x 30"w x 48" h. Can anybody tell me if a 250w hps lite w/ a cool tube reflector and bath exh. fans for cooling and ventilation is sufficient? Will painting the inside flat white work or is alum. foil better?
I am going to put cfls low on each side
How many plants can I plant in that space? I want to put in 6 AFs of diff. strains for variety.
Thanks for your help

welcome to the site kynyf!!

That sounds about like my first room and i had a 250 in there and i needed an extraction fan to cool the little room. I started with regular fans and what have you but they couldn't keep the temp at bay at all.
The whit paint will work like a charm, its what i did in my new rooms spreads the light evenly. I had up to 14 in mine at once in 6"pots. So you can cram a good deal in there

Thanks for the advice. Does'nt the air cooled reflector cool enough? Would 4' T5 flourescent be as good and a lot cooler?

The air cooled hood has to have something to move the air through it in order for it to cool down. The reflector its self will not cool the light
and yes i do believe that a T5 set up may be cooler, but that i am not 100% certain.

I was thinking of a push-pull set of fans on the cool tube. One to blow in from outside to the lite & one to exh away from it and another fan from the outside in for fresh air ventilation.

your hps will be by far the most sufficient source of light, you can combat the heat with your hood.. The typical thing to do with cooltubers I have seen, is to connect them to an extractor fan that force the hot air trapped around the lamp (due to the heat resistant glass) to leave the grow space completely. If the other end of the cool-tuber (some just have small holes to draw air from the inside of the growing area) is either connected to an intake fan that brings air from outside your box OR to a carbon filter(optional, could easily leave it w/o unless you want to combat smell that way) that is left to extract air from the grow area.

So to keep it simple:
-you MUST draw air OUTSIDE from using an extractor fan that is somehow attached to your cooltuber.
- Depending on its structure you can decide whether you want to draw air from INSIDE the area or OUTSIDE.
a)People that draw from outside the area IMO have big heat issues (i only see this happen in grow logs that have 1kW Hps's in grow rooms and intake cold air from outside the house),
b) I would just use your hood to extract air from INSIDE the box, so you don't have to open an extra hole in the back. If you do decide to intake air from outside, you will have to make sure you have a mini vent system for the rest of the area as fresh air circulation is 'a must' for any grow environment even w/o heat issues..

The general rule of thumb with HPS lights is 40 watts per sq. ft. for veg and 60 watts for flower. Since your area is 10 sq. ft., a 400 watt would be the minimum size you should use. T5s are cooler as are LEDs. Two 240 watt LED panels would light that space up nicely and would reduce the ventilation needed.

Grown in 3 gallon pots, you could fit about 8 plants in there, 10 if you really cram them in.
