Sorry if this is to technical but can someone explain how doing so causes the side branching to become multiple main stems/colas ? Like is it a hormone trigger or something?
You got it. In a nutshell, the plant wants to grow so that there is one main stem above all the others, which will become a big old cola/bud once the plant flowers. To do this, it sends most of the growth hormones to the top. The word for this is called "apical dominance". What LST (or Super Cropping/Topping/Etc) does is force or trick the plant into redistributing those growth hormones to multiple sites instead of just the central stem by bending the central stem down to a lower level where the other side branches are.
And since all plants naturally seek the light, any branch you bend will turn and start growing upright again regardless of which direction it's growth site was facing.
