AJs Land of Random Thoughts

@CannabisMingus look about halfway down page three. @nizmoKush is using the same set up as me. If you buy a good bagged living soil you should be fine with amendments on the first run. I just amend, bokashi and moved on after the grow and leave the roots except the main root at the base of the stalk. I haven't ran my earthbox yet but I can't imagine it works much different. I would be careful with the amount of scraps you feed the worms they really will not need a ton if you are only running 100 like Nizmo does with all the other stuff in there. Overfeeding is the biggest first time worm farmer mistake.

@nizmoKush how many runs have you done in your earthbox? I am trying to think how long can you go before you need to dump the soil? as some point it is going to be a box of just castings. I mean 100 healthy active worms can in theory eat they can eat half to their full weight a day. So that's a tenth of a pound give or take. I do not know the specifics but the more room they have the more they breed. Will the 100 create offspring in there? I mean do you think you have more than you started with just by observation of course.

So at some point you are sitting on a bin of worm castings not soil. I am not sure how big of a problem that is just trying to think it through before i use this damn thing.

@AJrexxx honestly I think I’m on grow 5 or 6th don’t remember. And yeah I do see baby worms but if I remember correctly I read that worms will control their population depending on size of container or some like that. Probably after this round I’ll dump and spread some on top of my grassroots living soil pots. And start a fresh earth box jr well the soil that is.

You're doing no till, right? What is your ammendment schedule like in regards to between/during grows etc?

My guess is just top dress with nutrient blend similar to mine from discussions we had. The more ferments and such you add the less the top dress. A lot of feel to it. I am probably going to convert to mainly ferments myself and will be cutting my reamending in half. Now this works better in larger set ups. I am probably going to 30 gallon pots next. More stable than 10 gallons for sure. I was planning on doing 15s or 20s but the increase to 30s was only a 4 inch diameter difference. I will be running multiple plants per container though.

This time around I didn’t do anything between grow just to see what would happen. But before I would just add some craft blend n buildaflower n some bokashi to get things going.. n that’s the same I do when I amend during grow. It’s ats simple as it gets with the occasional fruit n veggies for the worms.

@Suki813 The bigger your container the less maintenance and work it is. I started with 5 gallons and the plant literally sucks everything out of the soil. The bigger your container the less unstable it is. If that makes sense. Plus your return is greatly impacted. When I went from 5 to 10s (there were a couple of 7s in-between) I had about a 50% increase in size across the board. This was definitely more consistent with photos, auto veg time and genetics can limit this to a degree. Now going to 30s I am not expecting that same increase (law of diminishing returns and all)but more yield none the less. Even with two in a 30 gallon my yield should increase some.

Thinking maybe I can use this to increase my worm population so I can start that outdoor vermicomposting project I have been thinking about.

Yea definitely you could start moving some worms here and there and they should bounce back in the eb

@Waira You ever run across this in a photo? Topped it a few weeks back and a branch is growing out of where I clipped.
