I do the same by throwing them into my fruit cellar. Not only do they get absolute dark in there. Depending on the time of year it’s 55-65°F in there. I have seen a few days of that cause every major fan leaf on the plants to fall off with just a touch. I put a sheet down under them while in there because most I have done this way will start dropping their leaves as soon as you try to move them. So I cut the main stalk and by the time i’m done I have a sheet full of fan leaves & a plant full of buds and sugar leaf ready to hang upside down in my drying area. That way you can easily collect your fan leaves for however you want to use them. I’ve even been known to throw a handful in my morning smoothies.
