My old shop we had this big as electro magnetic drill press. Took 2 guys to muscle it in place. The old shop stewart told me working in the bridges the power fired up the magnet and held the drill press to the bridge steel. Worked really well he said.
Till one day he says the freaking power cut. He says you could see all these drill presses sailing thru the air and splashing into the river

Hahahahaha
I remember using a magbase on a sub, but I can't exactly remember what I was working on, too damn high, but I think it was that damn sail plane job on a 688 class sub. There was a class problem on the early production subs on the attachment and stabilizing of the sail planes.
Damn! That was one clusterfuck of a job from the QA prospective. No telling how many times me or QA put in changes to the controlled work package.
With all the BS, there was one hilarious moment towards the end. It was when reattaching the sail plane to the boat. The sub was along side the pier and a large crane with the plane in a suspended cradle. A 'pin' sticks out from the sail and the female end in the plane. The tolerances are pretty tight and the plane had to be positioned perfectly.
One of my guys and I were all safety geared up and riding on the plane. The pin is all lubed up.....made fun of my guy while he was doing it :eyebrows::rofl:....... and I'm calling the movements. The crane operator and crane are from the shipyard and he's good.
It still takes about 20 min of positioning to get it home. He had it partially in, but had to get the angle just right. When he hit the correct angle, it sunk home with a HUGE THUD. It was LOUD AF!
Bubbleheads
, slang for submariners, started coming outta the sub like a disturbed fire ant mound! :funny::funny::funny::funny:

I passed on driving a truck over there cause I couldn't have weapons......good money but too easy to lose my life.
Now THAT was a dangerous AF ob there.
My job turned out that it would have been ok for the term I was going to sign for. Kinda went to poopoo not long after.
