We have some pretty low temps here right now.28f outside, 45-50 in my building and in a tent with 350w of cobs which is equal to over 600w of hps in a 5x5 tent covered with multiple blankets the temps hit a high of 62 degrees. That's efficiency in a bad way. All light sources give off 2 things light and heat. 50+% efficiency cobs which I'm running is putting off a lot of light per watt but minimal heat. Epistar led panels are closer to 20% light and 80% heat. Pretty damn amazing.
Mechatronix makes very nice heatsinks. A lot better than the pin fins that are very common.
If your debating on going with cobs try a small setup first. Pick up some clu-048's and run them off an eBay driver driven real low like15-20 watts or even a repurposed mars driver on some flat aluminum with a fan near by. Check up on temps in the first few hours. If you like what you see you can pick up a better driver, cooling and mounting configuration.
