New Grower Zero Experience Grower - DWC Trans Siberian & Critical Jack

Thanks its so exciting to get this off the ground! Couldn't have done it without this site, the people here and information are unbelievably helpful. So long as I minimize my beginners mistakes (which are already myriad), I think I can actually do this.

I already moved the girls up in their pots and got the netpot holes covered up by hydroton. Will post some progress pics in a day or two; hoping that helps them out and I start to see more leaves in the next few days!

Always happy to help another fellow dwc grower! I got a ton of advice when I started here. Really gotta give it to the community. Good vibes all around. Lookin forward to the pics man!

looking good Elj your getting things going in the right direction. I see you getting some great help from our members :thumbs:and a good job Paying It Forward folks.

Update time fellas.

The ladies are looking pretty good I think. The top level of hydroton looks dry now and the rockwool appears to be much less saturated (but still damp... i think that stuff just takes a few days to dry out). I haven't topped off, but have been adjusting the ph back down to 5.5.

Here they are:

So, the Trans Siberian has me a little concerned. It doesn't look much different than it did 3 days ago, other than the cotyledons look even more sickly. The good news is that I can see the 2nd set of leaves getting started. I hope they'll really start to push out int he next couple days.

The Critical Jack is already taller and bigger than the Trans Siberian and is 4 days (in this case half as old) younger. Pretty awesome, I'm pumped for her. However, there are 2 questions I have on that lovely lass:

1. She has some yellow dots on the tips of her leaves. I think the light may have been too close... It was about 8-9 inches away. I moved it up 3 inches; I don't feel any heat on the back of my hand when its right above the plant.

2. She has a pretty big "bend" in the stem. It was hard to capture an in focus image of this, but the tops of the leaves are at about a 45 degree angle. What causes this?? Should I correct anything?

Thanks as always for your input.

OK, update. Looking like the Trans Siberian is a goner...

Here she is, day 9:

Looks baddddd to me. The warning signs were there a few days ago, but even though I took what I think were the right steps, it looks like she's not going to make it. Leaves are droopy as all get out (touching the rockwool) and she hasn't grown taller or pushed those new leaves out that have been showing for 3-4 days now.

Critical Jack looks much stronger and healthier at day 5:

Those yellow leaf tips scare me though. I checked her water last night and it was at 5.8. It was 6.0 when I got home from work this evening so I adjusted it back down to 5.5. No nutes, and the HPS is " away, while the closest CFL is " away.

What am I doing wrong? Should I be worried about this one?

Would really love some feedback guys. Thanks again for everyone's time and support.

I dont know if i can help much as i'm a dwc noob but i can tell you how i do mine. I keep my ph 5.8 to 6.0 and i only have a ph meter so i cant help with the ppm or anything like that. As for nutes mine got zero for first 7 days then i followed the fox farm hydro chart because thats what i use. I think you may have just over watered unless you added nutes early on. Then the yellowing leaves my have been caused by that. Like i said i'm no hydro/dwc expert. Hit one of the new grower mods up in a pm for some more advice and maybe someone over in the hydro section:toke::peace:

Thanks man. No nutes in either one, just ph water the whole time. I'm wondering if the 200ppm tap water has anything to do with it.

I definitely think the trans Siberian was too wet at the beginning, but I think I fixed that in the critical jack seed that I started almost a week later.

What are your temps in there? Also, 200ppm shouldn't hurt your seedlings, especially at this point. You want to be in the 400-600 at this point, so I have no idea whats turning your tips yellow. Either she's sensitive or she's hungry. That's weird that she would turn like that in 200ppm water. How did you prepare the water btw?

Maybe try some distilled water? So being it's day nine I would start to follow the General Hydroponics nutrients chart.

Thanks again for your help, it's so great to have people who are willing to give me a hand.

Temp range for the last 24 hours is 68-76. It typically holds steady around 76-78.

Humidity seems really low to me, it's been 25-32% the last several days, so I put a bucket of water in there to hopefully evaporate off and bring it up.

To prep water, I get it out of the tap and let it sit in an empty bucket for a few hours or overnight. Then I adjust the ph using the ph down solution.

Gotta get to work, will update more info later tonight

So to add on to my earlier post, I did my first nute feeding on the critical jack. I did a 1/4 strength feed using this chart

She looks strong except for the yellow leaf tips.

Trans Siberian definitely is a goner. Looks completely wilted today. Tough luck I guess. Starting another seed.

I'll keep learning and trying.
