New Grower Zero Experience Grower - DWC Trans Siberian & Critical Jack

Hey guys - Per toke's recommendation, I went ahead and popped my babies in their DWC buckets.

Here is a pic of how it looks in the bucket:

The Trans Siberian still looks really strong. The new Critical Jack that I popped 2 days ago sprouted this morning and also looks good. Also went ahead and dropped her into a bucket. No roots, but I guess thats OK?

Water level in the buckets came just over the bottom of the netpot. I put enough hydroton in there to cover the water (just about 1 layer plus a tiny bit more) and then put the rockwool cubes in over that.

Here are close ups of the TransSiberian

This is at day 8 since I put started the seed, day 5 since it popped up from the rockwool. Look like its on track? Cotyledons are a little yellow, but I've read that's not something to be super worried about...

Day 1 for the Critical Jack.

The cotyledon's look super yellow on the Trans Siberian. Should I be worried???

Also, the color is a bit off on the Critical Jack (thanks cameraphone). Its a nice dark vibrant green.

Hey buddy,
You and I are starting a critical jack at the exact same time! Check my signature.

Awesome! You appear to have about 100 years of experience on me. Your setup looks fantastic; I'm jealous. I'm working in such a tight space... spent the last 2 hours trying to figure out how to duct my carbon filter.

Any thoughts on the yellow cotyledons on the Trans Siberian plant? I'm a little worried about her. The leaves themselves look really good to me, but I just want to be sure the yellow baby leaves aren't a warning sign.

Thanks for the complements. When starting out, things are always touchy. I am just as likely to fuck up as you are at this point. But you are right, not much to worry about! Looks good!

Make sure that the open air to the water is covered. Kind of hard to do at first, that is for sure. It's a balancing act.. You don't want to impede the vertical growth but then at the same time, unless you keep the light from getting into the DWC bucket, you will have algae growth.. But that said, you are right on track. I actually like the lower wattage 150 watt HPS you have. I think that for 2 plants, you will be able to do just fine. But if I may, try to vedge with a couple of well placed CFL's at 6500k.. They do great!! Your HPS will be a better fit at 3 weeks..

What kind of lighting are you using?

I'm running a 150w HPS (self contained ballast) overhead and then I've got 2x 23w 5000k CFL's running to supplement on the side. The HPS is about 12 inches from the tops of the buckets.

That gives me roughly 20,000 lumens in 4 sq ft.

PS - I think its safe to say I'm much much much more likely to fuck something up, if I haven't already (probably since I killed my first CJ seed).

They look really wet. Are you watering from the top? I'm still a dwc noob also bro. I had one look like yours and it was from over water. When i got it (just over looked it) was when i slowed top watering, like 2/3 times max, very little water. Also i had the water level to high on my net pot. Set it to 1/4in in the water till tap root came through, then lowered water. The rock wool just looks really wet:2cents::peace:

Hey thanks for chiming in... I actually haven't watered them at all since putting into DWC buckets. I thought they looked wet too. Basically the rockwool is sitting on a layer of hydroton that was just at the level where the water was entering the netpot.

Should the water level be below that? I think the rockwool is just wicking up water from the hydroton.

Found a pic of my rockwool at day 2 or 3. It and the top stones remained that dry. Just a little of water as the bottom of the rockwool was touchong the water:toke::peace:
