Why does dr earth dry amendments take weeks for the nutrients to get to roots?

Hey man,

So my first grow I did exactly as he said and my plants seemed to have calcium or magnesium deficiency, it was showing both symptoms. So my second go at is instead of doing his ratios I decide to make my own. What I did was for every bag of 50L Coco coir I put 21 tbsp of 4-4-4 All Purpose and 7 tbsp 2-8-4 Power Bloom. Compared to his suggest of 4 tbsp per gallon 70/30 4-4-4/2-8-4, so 50L(12gal)x 4 = 48 tbsp compared to 28 tbsp in my second run. And for the most part my plants are looking considerably better. Except for one that has a genetic mutation and is probably extra sensitive to nutrients. Hopefully that helps you out!
Totally, thanks man. I wondered about those ratios and amounts. I was thinking about doing the same thing but just not sure on the amounts so that is very helpful.

Just wanted to clear up a typo, I'm not certain but I'm pretty sure I had symptom of a calcium/ magnesium def but also signs of nutrient burn. I'm guessing it was too much nitrogen? Can't say for certain. All I know is that so far this new mix is going well, my ph is usually steady at 6.5 as well. After reading other people's experience, switching to a 50/50 of soil/coco sounds to be a much better method. Anyways, good luck on your grow!

Oh, and I don't know if you'll see this but I did almost exactly the same thing with the amendments that you and Cannuk did with a50/50 blend and exactly the same thing happened to my plants. I even added other stuff like quano, castings and other junk, haha. I had put two in smart pots and the first one died and the second is still alive but totally fits your description of the burn/def appearance. I don't know what to do with that plant and it's probably a dwarf now anyway. I haven't tried cal-mag but higher ph water and kelp (potassium) has helped somewhat. Did your plants die before you changed your amendments?

Hey pink,

So I managed to network with a grower who uses Gaia green dry amendments on a regular basis. He told me instead of doing a 70-30 split he does 50/50 from the get go and he does 4 tablespoons per gallon of medium. Also he says he puts 2 teaspoons per gallon of water of Epsom salt to deal with the lack of magnesium. Personally I looked into using Epsom salt and decided to use cal-mag instead because Epsom salt can cause root rot and a bunch of other stuff in the roots. At least that's what I googled.

As of yesterday I have started applying calmag and my plants seem to like it already. It's too soon right now to see the full effect but the new growth is looking lush and green. Also when I went to my local grow shop and the employee there confirmed that calmag is what is needed. He said All Purpose and Power Bloom provide almost everything needed but it's missing a good amount of calcium, magnesium, iron. I'm not saying that this is fact this is just what he told me. Also disregard those ratios I told you before because in the beginning my plants were healthy for the first few weeks until this week. Anyways hope this is helpful.

this threads a couple months old but for what its worth i use dr. earth home grown and flower girl with botainicare cal/mag plus and DTE bio-live and have good results with 2 Tblspn per gallon of coco/perlite at 70/30 or 50/50 (they have a lot of the same ingredients). i recently made a tea with 1/2 cup grow and 1/2 cup bloom with 1 tbspn molasses in one gallon of water and the plants exploded!
