New Grower When to harvest autos? Your leaves will tell you.

One of the most frequently asked questions is how do I know when my autos are ready to pick? The convention wisdom from growing photo period plants was to watch for color change in the trichomes, or crystals. For an uplifting high, harvest when the trichomes are all cloudy, for more of a stone, wait till a percentage have turned amber. Sound advice, for photos. But autos are a little different. While some strains have shown amber trics, many do not.

So how do I know when they are ready? I watch the the fan leaves. Over the past several years of growing autos I started taking samples at various stages of growth to evaluate the high. I tend to prefer my smoke with a little stone so began to leave them longer than the 8-9 weeks that are advertised. I find that around 11-12 weeks the plants are ripe for me. I also began to see a correlation between the color of the fan leaves, the color of the trics and the high/stone quality of the smoke at the various sample intervals. It seemed that the greener the fan leaves, the more clear trics the buds had. As the fan leaves started to yellow and die off, the trics became less clear and more milky. By the time that all the fan leaves had died off and the bud leaves were starting to yellow, I got the quality of smoke I wanted. At that time most of the trics were now milky with no, or only a few, clear ones. Here are some examples:

I've found this to be a very reliable method. It takes about 3 weeks for the fan leaves to die off. During that time the buds will continue to fatten up as the plant uses the energy stored in the fan leaves. So when I see my leaves start to yellow, I wait a week, then begin cleansing them. Two weeks later they will be well cleansed and read to harvest.

Of course there will be other factors such as genetics, lighting, nutrients, pot size, etc. that will effect how long a plant takes. But as a general guide for when to pick, just watch your leaves.

NOTE: If you have questions regarding your personal grow, please post them in the appropriate forum and not in this thread.

If you want to harvest at the pick of thc mature and before Amber trichs (I want to avoid the stoned effect for that strain) should I harvest when the first fan leaves turn yellow or abit later?
I can't find any jack 47 auto grow if you can help with that also I would be thankful , I ll make a photo grow when I am done and everything is ok.

Yellowing of the fan leaves in late FLOWER is an indicator that your girls are maturing. There is a correlation to yellowing and tri coloring. The longer the girls mature (yellowing) the tris will also color. Clear tris' will be too early. Cloudy tris are the good time to think of harvesting. Cannabis has been harvested for centuries w/o a 30x-60x jeweler's loop. Cut a test bud and if you vape then you'll get an idea of how the girls are coming along. I will wait a another week and harvest if I feel she's ready. The more you grow the more you'll get the hang of it.

Yes after 50th day that`s how I do it mostly cause I want to taste it hehe :p
And something I haven't met before the trichs of Jack 47 auto flower are almost full milky from day 40, so it will be one of that autos you harvest by leaves or by tasting the fruits.
So to harvest at the Zenith of THC production the first yellowing of leaves is when the best harvest window starts, when the plant indicates that it stopped growing and have nothing more to give than mature and die?

i have a question is there also a best time of day to chop a plant? Like before the lights go on or after the lights go out or something? Does that even matter?
Only did a few outdoor grows before (photosensitives) and always chopped in the dark for the obvious reasons, but now that I'm indoors I was wondering.
I researched this awhile back and I found that I I like doing a 48 hours complete dark. I put entire plant and pot in my dark box for 48 hours. No peeking! After the long wait, I take it to dimly lit room ( photosynthesis begins happening very quickly try keeping light to min), I then start at bottom of plant cut whole branch off, trim sugar leaves tight to buds, then immediately hang it back in my dark box, upside down with clothes pin, onto next one. So on and so forth. I'm quick so i can do this in bout 30 min start to finish. The 48 dark helps push sugars, and starches to roots. Helps with drying buds and really improves taste. My dark box is ventilated but air not blowing directly on buds. Hope this helps:pass:

If u decide to not do a dark period, depending on your lighting schedule, you can always do it right before your lights come back on after ur nite time.

OK, so on my most recent harvest, I found this thread immensely helpful. That said, as i stare at this Dutch Passion Frisian Dew in my greenhouse, I find myself scratching my head. trichs are clouding up, pistils are all red (know that is not a good indicator), but the leaves are bright green, with no sign of yellowing.

Any thoughts, input? PerhapsI should just cut a sample and give her a vape taste?!

Not all plants will yellow before harvest, of the 2 different strains I have tried and grew multiple times none of my plants yellowed at harvest time they tend to start going yellow only after the flush has began

I have found waiting for at least a week after all the calyx's have swollen and the hairs recede is the best for a deep body stone and good head high too.
