New Grower When to harvest autos? Your leaves will tell you.

One of the most frequently asked questions is how do I know when my autos are ready to pick? The convention wisdom from growing photo period plants was to watch for color change in the trichomes, or crystals. For an uplifting high, harvest when the trichomes are all cloudy, for more of a stone, wait till a percentage have turned amber. Sound advice, for photos. But autos are a little different. While some strains have shown amber trics, many do not.

So how do I know when they are ready? I watch the the fan leaves. Over the past several years of growing autos I started taking samples at various stages of growth to evaluate the high. I tend to prefer my smoke with a little stone so began to leave them longer than the 8-9 weeks that are advertised. I find that around 11-12 weeks the plants are ripe for me. I also began to see a correlation between the color of the fan leaves, the color of the trics and the high/stone quality of the smoke at the various sample intervals. It seemed that the greener the fan leaves, the more clear trics the buds had. As the fan leaves started to yellow and die off, the trics became less clear and more milky. By the time that all the fan leaves had died off and the bud leaves were starting to yellow, I got the quality of smoke I wanted. At that time most of the trics were now milky with no, or only a few, clear ones. Here are some examples:

I've found this to be a very reliable method. It takes about 3 weeks for the fan leaves to die off. During that time the buds will continue to fatten up as the plant uses the energy stored in the fan leaves. So when I see my leaves start to yellow, I wait a week, then begin cleansing them. Two weeks later they will be well cleansed and read to harvest.

Of course there will be other factors such as genetics, lighting, nutrients, pot size, etc. that will effect how long a plant takes. But as a general guide for when to pick, just watch your leaves.

NOTE: If you have questions regarding your personal grow, please post them in the appropriate forum and not in this thread.

I have a question. So I told someone about this thread on a photo fourm and I got this response.

So is that true? Do auto trichs start degrading when it starts reaching the end of its life?

No more than trichs on photoperiod degrading at the end of their lives.
That is a huge over simplification of the process anyway.
But the point they were trying to make is in error.

UV light degrades THC and ambering is the plants way of protecting the THC from degradation. When ambering starts THC is being converted to CBN. So the longer the plant is left once ambering begins, the more CBN it will have and the less THC. More THC equals a psychoactive high, more CBN a more sedative effect. This is true for any cannabis plant, photo or auto.

Cheers Muddy, excellent thread. You just saved me alot of hassle with my first harvest, cheers again.

So hello before I start I would like to thank you for sharing your informations and for helping us (noobs) with growth :) you will notice that my english is not wery good but that is because Im from Slovenia :)

I have lowryder #2 I planted it on 12.december and on 15.december she looked out of the soil so now she is in day 53... 2 weeks ago I had a problem because of under water (been 2 days away from home) so she almoust died but I somehow saved her and now she looks like this (look at the photo :)... And I was reading around the web that when 80% of pistils are brown its time to harvest but I found an interesting article of you where you explained that I need to keep untill all the fan leaves fall off, but the thing is my fan leaves falled off when I underwattered my plant and now I dont know if its time to harvest or not because my pistils are like 80% brown and its only 53d day and I dont have a microscope (I took some photos with mobile but they look like s*it... Even s*it looks better :p)
so now Im looking for your help because Im perfectionist and I want to hear from the expert what does he think, so in this oppinion you are the expert :) what would you do in my place? Oh yes I want to get stoned hard with it :)

Thanks for the reply,
Erik van Jerman

Thanks for clearing this up. I would have looked at the pistils like with photo's, thankfully I still have some time before I get to harvesting

freakin out

i fondly remember my first grow, not knowin a helluva lot, and freakin out cause all my leaves were turnin yellow  :peace:

I'm coming up on harvest time for my first two auto strains. One is White Widow and the other LowRyder (not #2). I'll definitely use the health of the fan leaves to determine harvest time (thanks Muddy), but I'm curious about whether or not to trim the other leaves. I see so many pics where folks have trimmed all of the leaves at some point during flowering and I'm really curious how much that actually helps. My goal was to make this as clean and simple of a grow as possible, and so far it's been cake and it looks like my harvest will be plenty big for these two plants. So...is it really worth trimming all of those leaves? Or should I stick to my original plan of "simple simple simple" and let nature do its thing?
