New Grower When to harvest autos? Your leaves will tell you.

One of the most frequently asked questions is how do I know when my autos are ready to pick? The convention wisdom from growing photo period plants was to watch for color change in the trichomes, or crystals. For an uplifting high, harvest when the trichomes are all cloudy, for more of a stone, wait till a percentage have turned amber. Sound advice, for photos. But autos are a little different. While some strains have shown amber trics, many do not.

So how do I know when they are ready? I watch the the fan leaves. Over the past several years of growing autos I started taking samples at various stages of growth to evaluate the high. I tend to prefer my smoke with a little stone so began to leave them longer than the 8-9 weeks that are advertised. I find that around 11-12 weeks the plants are ripe for me. I also began to see a correlation between the color of the fan leaves, the color of the trics and the high/stone quality of the smoke at the various sample intervals. It seemed that the greener the fan leaves, the more clear trics the buds had. As the fan leaves started to yellow and die off, the trics became less clear and more milky. By the time that all the fan leaves had died off and the bud leaves were starting to yellow, I got the quality of smoke I wanted. At that time most of the trics were now milky with no, or only a few, clear ones. Here are some examples:

I've found this to be a very reliable method. It takes about 3 weeks for the fan leaves to die off. During that time the buds will continue to fatten up as the plant uses the energy stored in the fan leaves. So when I see my leaves start to yellow, I wait a week, then begin cleansing them. Two weeks later they will be well cleansed and read to harvest.

Of course there will be other factors such as genetics, lighting, nutrients, pot size, etc. that will effect how long a plant takes. But as a general guide for when to pick, just watch your leaves.

NOTE: If you have questions regarding your personal grow, please post them in the appropriate forum and not in this thread.

So I've got a question: Similar to the guy above, how at this point, can I know for sure that I'm ready to chop? I'm going on week 12, from what I can tell with my 30x-60x, I'm at about 75% cloudy trichs but not one leaf is yellowing at all.. In fact, they all look luscious and green, as if it still had a month and a half to go, but I'm pretty sure this thing is an auto, not a photo.. All of my #'s are good with respect to RH, ppm, pH, temp, etc... I may snip a small branch and dry/cure it to see how much longer it needs, but by the smell and the looks, this thing wants to get smoked soon!!! :)

Not all auto trichomes turn amber, but you definitely should wait until pretty much all the trichs are cloudy & mature. Check them on top of the plant and on some of the lower buds. How are your pistils? If you still have loads of new white ones popping out, you probably have a ways to go. You really have to go on a combination of leaves, pistils, trichs, and gut instinct. And as a newer grower, your gut will almost always tell you to chop too soon before the bud density reaches its peak. Especially if your plant is fully green, there's no harm in waiting another week to reassess. Trust me, your patience will be rewarded!!!

Thanks for the info!!! I'd say I've only seen a handful of new pistils in the last week or so, but low-and-behold, after I posted this, I rotated my plant around, and a bunch of the larger fan leaves have started turning yellowish towards the middle.. I'll take a picture, if that sounds confusing, but I think I just got my answer.. I'm gonna run nutes one more day tomorrow, and then begin flush. Thanks!!

I took the top cola off and taking the higher nodes off today and going to let the lower nodes goba few more days. Not sure its worth it if it puts the plant into shock from having the top half removed already.

I took all the side branches off first then let the bottom of the main cola the most sturdiest of the plant ripen some more once and I had a nice big juicy looking cone bud ready to rock. I left the top cola alone.. but to each his/her own. I only did that to a regular strain not an Autoflower.

Just re-read this thread, again. Awesome stuff, Muddy

I had too take the Top off mine as the bottom suddenly started growing buds after it lost all its fan leaves I stuck a clamp on it as I read they can get an embolism I only had a kitchen implement but it did the trick and grew for another
Ten days . It was fine the Latest one Green house sweet Mango is over 3 months old I've just begun final flush That seems to be quite even but it wouldn't Auto flower so its pretty much behaved like a photo .

Andy my man,

I am ready to pull my Dinafem WW XXL. However none of the leaves have turned. However trichs are cloudy and amber. The Mills nutrient base has nitrogen in it and you are supposed to use up the last two weeks which are to be flush according to Mills. I am one of the guilty people who harvest too early. What do you think?

I'm in the same boat, Blessed. Most of my trichs are cloudy, and a few are amber, with more ambering everyday. I want more of a high, instead of couch lock, so I am thinking I will stick to the plan and harvest in the next 10 days around her 81st day. Not disregarding Muddy, I just don't wanna be "stuck" every time I light up

Bandit, I am along the same thread of thought. I like a nice clear smile on my face high. I do like a hard hitter when going to bed but most of the time, I just want a big smile and if I'm lucky enough to use it, a big Moby Dick :-)

Higher levels of N in late flowering will keep the fan leaves green longer. Please keep in mind that this was written with the new, uninformed grower in mind and is only a general guideline. Everyone's individual situation is always the final determining factor. If you think they are ready, pinch a small bud, do a quick dry and give it a smoke. If it gives you the high you are after, then go ahead and harvest it regardless of how the fan leaves look.
