New Grower When to harvest autos? Your leaves will tell you.

One of the most frequently asked questions is how do I know when my autos are ready to pick? The convention wisdom from growing photo period plants was to watch for color change in the trichomes, or crystals. For an uplifting high, harvest when the trichomes are all cloudy, for more of a stone, wait till a percentage have turned amber. Sound advice, for photos. But autos are a little different. While some strains have shown amber trics, many do not.

So how do I know when they are ready? I watch the the fan leaves. Over the past several years of growing autos I started taking samples at various stages of growth to evaluate the high. I tend to prefer my smoke with a little stone so began to leave them longer than the 8-9 weeks that are advertised. I find that around 11-12 weeks the plants are ripe for me. I also began to see a correlation between the color of the fan leaves, the color of the trics and the high/stone quality of the smoke at the various sample intervals. It seemed that the greener the fan leaves, the more clear trics the buds had. As the fan leaves started to yellow and die off, the trics became less clear and more milky. By the time that all the fan leaves had died off and the bud leaves were starting to yellow, I got the quality of smoke I wanted. At that time most of the trics were now milky with no, or only a few, clear ones. Here are some examples:

I've found this to be a very reliable method. It takes about 3 weeks for the fan leaves to die off. During that time the buds will continue to fatten up as the plant uses the energy stored in the fan leaves. So when I see my leaves start to yellow, I wait a week, then begin cleansing them. Two weeks later they will be well cleansed and read to harvest.

Of course there will be other factors such as genetics, lighting, nutrients, pot size, etc. that will effect how long a plant takes. But as a general guide for when to pick, just watch your leaves.

NOTE: If you have questions regarding your personal grow, please post them in the appropriate forum and not in this thread.

Leaves I'm taking next, a few more days and they will be sucked dry of nutes soon. Here some pics of yellowing leaves.

Just love Wiener Dogs. Buds looking good too.

THANX, I just posted but I believe you just answered my ?

Yea, I was referring to a couple videos on youtube where they showed flushing before harvest with large volumes of water, then I googled it more and found the ed rosenthal article on his website. Also found a good article about not putting molassas in your res tank, lol.

I see allot of confusion with this question and the life of an auto..truth is breeders do different things for different reasons and I have found if the stain info is not a leg puller and you have seen others grow it in that time then its a factor on your end..But best way to tell for me is when hairs start to dry..when you see about 30-40 % hairs dry you have no more then 2 weeks and I would start you cleanse then..also some Nutes are lighter on the grow and dont effect the flavor much..the debate on this is ongoing LOL Plus you choice in the type of amber you want ..if its a ambering strain LOL ...really just take test/samples and pick it when you like the smoke!PEACE

Yep, I've been sampling trash buds at weekly intervals starting last week. I love Indicas for the medicinal qualities and short stature. This 60dw is 90% Indica 10% Sativa.

Tips are starting to yellow now so the cleanse is on. I might need only 1 week of cleanse coz I was real light on the nutes.

My plant is at 13 weeks now and there are no signs of yellowing fan leaves. Excellent health, fat, dense buds but no yellowing what so ever. Should I wait until they start getting yellow? Will I still get some additional size/weight on them? It's a Kera Autoflower Dwarf, there are some pictures I posted in another thread I made.

Hey Chilla

I just went over to your thread to take a peek - the picture is from 7 weeks old - and looks like it had about 3 weeks left.

Do you have a recent piccy to take a look at?
Also do you have a scope for the trichs? (just to make sure they're not all clear)

13 weeks seems like a long time, considering where your plants were at 6 weeks ago! :d5:

When to start final week of feeding (dying leaves started?)

My Northern Storm auto is 8 weeks + 6 days. About 4 days ago I began to get these yellowing leaves around the bottom. Today, it's about twice as much as it was:

Is this the yellowing which should signal the final week of feeding, followed by two weeks of water-only cleansing? Or, is this due to lack of light and I should wait for more generalized (all over) yellowing? I do notice a yellow leaf forming higher up. So, I guess I'm asking if the 1-week (final feeding week) began 2-4 days ago, or if it's going to begin in the next 2-4 days if leaves yellow higher up?

I'm probably being too tedious about this. But, just want to understand if the dying leaves signaling final week start at the bottom like this.

Also, when you guys say to remove the dying leaves. Do you really pluck them, or wait till they dry and pull off easily? Right now, they seem firmly attached. Not sure if this means there's more nutes in them the plant can use. Or, if I should remove them with some force.

This is the rest of the plant:

Overall, the plant looks like it has more life in it. Makes me think I'm 6-10 days away from final-week feeding. But, as I said, I noticed a slightly yellowing fan leaf halfway up the plant.

Having trouble posting pics in this thread. I have been pulling them off as they are about to fall off on their own. Took a few with the snips that were still green on the bottom and should have left them.now. I'll wait til they are ready on their own. Those yellow fan leaves in the first pic can go, if they don't come off by themselves, clip them off.

A question of my own: Should I start mancuring green, frosty sugar leaves on buds now before they start to yellow so I can gather up some shake to smoke while the buds dry and cure?
