Lots of hash.
I've been reading some breeding threads, and found some where people who had just crossed a couple of different breeds, and were already calling the strain their own.

Personally I find this a bit much, and wouldn't consider calling that plant mine when all you've done is shove them together for a while.

It got me thinking though, under what conditions can you call a plant / strain yours?

How many F's would you go through, or is it just crossing & it's yours? What do people think?

I wouldn't mind having a plant to my name, but I was thinking undiscovered stuff. I have a Jamaican unknown that I intend to use for this, but only as there is no entitlement to the plant by anyone.

Personally id like to think f3 or f4?
I was wondering the same especially with mephisto putting out f1 crosses of their own. I couldnt cross orange deisel with strawberry nuggets and call it my own, its already called deez nuggz as an f1...

Wow, just had a look at those guys. Commercial F1's, from combining autos & regular - Mmmmm.

The commercial f1s are from crossing their own stabilized autos.so they all auto still. Shoulda clarified

It just depends on how you make seeds. Alot of people do different stuff. If your just making feminized seeds with regular. You can name it whatever you want after the first cross. After it self pollinates itself . It becomes unique nobody else has the same exact pheno is you do. An you created feminized seeds of something. If your crossing regular with regular. It takes three crosses. On the third cross you can name it. That's when you really get to see what the offspring will look like. Normally people use back cross seeds or pick a clone. They choose a good male or female. An keep breeding back to the same clone. They keep the clone alive by recloning over and over. Im not expert on any of that stuff. It's just what I know, but autoflowers are different than photoperiod breeding @Hypathetical Gardener and op

Cool, maybe it was just me being picky. I thought it a bit forward that someone who was one step in talking to breeders about 'his' cross, and how good it was. I was kind of thinking a minimum of the above, unless no one has a claim to the offspring. Just to clarify, the clone they keep - is it usually a fem or male?

I am not sure. Im personally crossing sour crinkle to deez nuggz and am pretty excited that the chances of someone else having already done it is VERY slim considering i got the deez nuggz at the illuminauto drop and IMMEDIATELY planted it. I spose itll be unique and noone else would have it. Im naming it for the project bit wont consider it done till f4. And its mostly private stock and the rest sharing not sales. So i dont really feel any kinda way about it. Maybe mephisto will see it and decide to release it as a strain!! Id be honored. Its all their genetics initially anyway.

Normally they use fathers to keep recloning. To keep the line alive. There's all kinds of breeder some cool as hell some anal about different things. When you cross a strain keep the name written down in a book organised. An who is the breeder you got your previous seed crosses from, that created it. Next when you successful crossed your third time. Your now the breeder of that variety. I strongly suggest buying seeds from trusted breeders some big names sell hermies too so watch out. but you need to know the breeder your seeds are coming from. So you can pin point the strain your growing. An can look up its ancestory. Or how it grows, what to expect. Like from seedfinder. An now you know the ancestors of your crosses from seedfinder. highly suggest to be accurate with the names though. An not deceive the cannabis industry. Like most breeders sell something called banana strawberry or something an taste like oranges. They do it just to push there product on others. An the buyer is expecting to taste banana strawberries.

You can use a male or female cut. Most people use a male father though up yo you. Here'sthe break down for breeding photoperiods

How to backcross create a strain
Only for photoperiod breeding

1 pick a mom or dad F1
2 [clone F1 cubed]
3 outcross F1 mom or dad to different F1=F2
4 cross F2 back to F1 clone= stable F2
5 outcross F2 mom or dad to different F1=F3
6 cross F3 back to F1 clone= stable F3
7 repeat the process and cross 2 F3's
8 you get a stablized vigorous strain new
9 you get to name the strain anything you want.

ATTENTION! But you still got to test if it's sexually stable too. An can predict the offspring. Landraces are best for breeding at first because there vigourous an very sexually stable to start with.

im no expert remember take that with a grain of salt

Whenever you get a seed off a plant it yours to call what you like. If it's a good strain is another matter.
Everybody started with borrowed genetics and throwing stuff together.
Technically it's not I kindfully disagree. There's science to it. Your getting the offspring of someone else is stuff. Until you you put that work in. That's your unique offspring after your successful 3rd cross. Because you can predict the offspring. It's unique because nobody used the same exact phenotypes is you.
