What is a Good Germination Kit

Do you ever have issues with the pellet's fabric not fully breaking down and hindering root expansion?

If so, do you modify the peat pellet, such as thin slits all around to help with degradation?

Yes! Hahaha so funny you mention that. I have not had an issue with roots being able to penetrate the fabric but, if I am able to catch the seedling in time, I do prefer to carefully remove the fabric from the pellet. It does crumble very easily so be ready to pot immediately. I find that a shotglass can carve a near perfect hole to drop the pellet into. I have planted seedlings with the tap root sticking through the fabric without issue.

Also, I have had 100% germination success with the "Jiffy" brand pellets. I recently bought a cheap 100pk off Amazon of knockoffs with noticeably less success. I do belive that the actual name brand version is different. It's $3.96 for a 36pack of replacement "Jiffy" pellets at homedepot currently. I would stick to them if you decide to go that route.

The current pellets I have, the knockoffs, don't hydrate as well and there is definitely a stiff compressed disc in the center that I have had to break up by hand before setting the seeds. I did try and buy the actual Jiffy brand but was one of those times where they show the box but out of stock on the 36count so get the 100 count and it shows up in a plain box.

If anyone doubts the power of a heated mat, this is my experience

After I hydrate my Jiffys, I cut away top and bottom fabric before placing seed.
