The Carrington event was bad enough and in todays world with the volume of electrical devices it would be a catastrophe. A large EMP would do the same job and then just blame who ever you want

I wonder if I still have some of that super dangerous lead paint laying around. Shame kids were eating it as wi-fi works in your house...
