New Grower Terrible luck lately

I haven't tried Muddy's way but if he uses it has to be OK. Maybe Muddy won't give up his coffee to hios plants. How ould he like a cup of hydrogen peroxide instead of his morning coffee we have to wonder.

One tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide to a quart of water, sprayed on the seedlings daily, also works very well to stop damping off.

I was thinking that also. I water all my pots ahead of time and put them under the light to let them get to the temp of the grow room before I even plant them If that helps any.

damping off can be stopped by chamomile tea too!

:toke:

sounds like temps to me though... 65-75 deg F I find is best.... and yes... if you look on any vegetable growing guide... you'll see a miriad of temp ranges for starting (ie peppers tomatoes 75-85 deg F) poppys (55 days 35 nights) etc etc... it is a very important part of germ. probably your issue... damping off is when the seed pops up usually, then kinda rots, wilts, molds down for no apparent reason.... usually too much moisture in the soil mix often combined with cooler conditions... soy ou could have both issues which would be resolved by proper germ temps!

:smokebuds: hope this helps

I bet if you just switched away from soil to either jiffy pucks or pro mix and started them in small pots under a heating pad it would all be fine. I use a spray bottle to water the seedlings and I think muddy does also as it prevents over watering and probably the mist gets warmed by the air before it strikes the plants. I never teally thought about that aspect of spraying and not dum[ing cold water on them but you may have a point.

i just had a thought.... i wonder if my water is to cold? thus making the soil to cold for the seedlings

LOL, I'm down to 2 cups a day and am not giving them up.

I agree, cold water could also have an effect. I draw rain water from a barrel, which of course is outdoors. I bring jugs of water indoors at least a day before so they can warm up first. I also pre water my pots and let them sit on the pad and under the lights for a day before planting the seeds. I seem to remember reading somewhere that 80 - 85 degrees is optimum for germinating weed seeds, but I'm not 100% certain on that one.

I attempted to germinate some seeds about 5 weeks ago. I didn't do anything different than I have before, but the temp was about 15-20 degrees cooler than with the seeds I have germed before. All three seeds cracked and then developed a fungus the next day before I could get them into dirt. I am certain it was the temp.

I also had started a bunch of vegetable seeds a few weeks ago, right about the time they sprouted the weather turned cooler, overcast & rainy, and I lost over half of them to dampening off and stretch.
Low temps and too much moisture are definitely not good for seedlings.

Your not drinking the low test decaffinated stuff are you Muddy? That will cause long term genetic defects.

by the way whatever happened to all those people from only 2 years ago who would rage on about autos and femming that would cause genetic failure of all the breeding stock. They would fill the post with pages and pages of scientific mumbo gumbo proving their point. Have they all gone away or are they just lurking in the wings. Next they will show up with pages of scientific proof that LEDs are causing severe forms of brain cancer.

Once I got a plant heating pad my hatching problems all dissapeared but my wife steals it now to hatch her pepper seeds with cause they hatch about 300 percent better with the heating pad. What should I do friends about this problem?

I pre-soak my seeds until they will drop to the bottom of the cup . Then into rapid rooter in small containers , placed on a seedling mat and covered with plastic wrap . Always just did the paper towel thing till I got autos . The autos would not germ the same as my photos .
