Hey all, I am totally new to organic gardening, but wanted to try my hand at it later this year with either Subcool's standard recipe or a slightly lighter version. I wanted to get folk's thoughts on my approach.

I know there are many very gifted organic growers on here with amazing custom super soil mixes, but since I'm new to this and I don't want to go overboard, I want to try to stick as close to Subcool's recipe as possible, while making sure it's not too hot for autos. What do you guys think about the below recipe? From what I've been able to find online, it sounds like most super soil mixes you find are geared towards photos and are heavier on the nitrogen. So, I thought of halving the amount of Blood Meal from 2.5 lbs(as would be standard) to 1.25 lbs. Are there the same concerns for the amounts of P and K in this recipe?

I plan on letting this cook for a good two months. Is there ever a point in time when super soil ages for too long and goes downhill?

Also, bear in mind that I plan on watering my plants with AN Root Tribe(for bacteria, fungi, myco, etc) for the first few weeks to make sure the soil gets a lot of life. Also, am thinking of still using GO Organics Cal-Mag as needed along with AN Bud Candy from time to time.

3 bags x 10-gallon Roots Organic Soil (For a total of 30 gallons or 105lbs of soil)

1 bags x 50L (35 lbs) Biobizz Light-Mix soil (Total of 35lbs)

1 bags x 30 lbs Organic Earthworm Castings (Total of 30lbs)

1/2 box 6 lbs Fish Bone Meal (3-16-0)

8 cups Kelp Meal

1/2 cup Dolomite Lime (“prilled” if possible)

1/4 cup Azomite (0-0-0.2)

1/4 box 5 lbs Blood Meal (12-0-0)

1/2 bag 4 lbs Happy Frog Bat Guano (0-5-0)

1/2 cup Epsom Salt

(Optional) Up to 25% Perlite (for extra drainage)

I would be growing in 3-gallon fabric smart pots. I've seen many folks use super soil on the bottom half to third of the pot, then fill up the rest with a lighter bagged mix. I've also seen some folks like @Eyes on Fire mix the super soil with a lighter mix 50/50 or so and just leave a decent-sized plug of light mix in the middle for the seedling to start in and grow into the mix. What do you guys think on these two approaches? I want to use either BioBizz LightMix or Roots Organic as the starter/lighter soil mix, in either case.

So, what do you guys think? Does this sound like a successful approach for an organic newbie?

well y our 45 gallon base your adding these..yes..?

1/2 box 6 lbs Fish Bone Meal (3-16-0) how many full US cups are there? I would use 3cups personally. maybe 4 if your using a pluggin or tiering system for your seedlings

8 cups Kelp Meal I would add only 5 cups maxim um personally

1/2 cup Dolomite Lime (“prilled” if possible) dolomite lime almost 2 cups. I would use powder dolomite AND prilled(or pellet Lime)

1/4 cup Azomite (0-0-0.2) and trace pick up Id add minimum of 2 cups

1/4 box 5 lbs Blood Meal (12-0-0) 2 cups to compliment the fish bone meal. maybe 2.5 or 3 if your going harder with ,again a plug of seedling mix of the tier method.

1/2 bag 4 lbs Happy Frog Bat Guano (0-5-0) how many cups? lol this is hot stuff.

1/2 cup Epsom Salt and this id up to around 1.5 cups

(Optional) Up to 25% Perlite (for extra drainage)

this si the recipe you gave me and thats how id use it with my plugging system and/or tier potting method. materials and items vary from region to region. but thats how i would use this recipe personally.hope this helps some. thanks

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it! I'll let you know how it works out later this year when I get it going.

Hi there @Eyes on Fire and @pop22

I am getting ready to start on this mix in the next month or so and was revisiting your posts. I have a few questions for you.

Where does the K come from in this standard supersoil recipe? People rave about the subcool recipe, so I assume it works, but I'm not seeing substantial K in the macro-nutrient ratios for the ingredients.

I also plan to add 30 lbs of worm castings, does this change the ratios for anything else at all? I assumed that would just mean that I need to make sure the soil is loose enough to breathe by adding perlite, but not sure if there is anything else to consider.

For the bat guano, how many cups should I add? I'm guessing the whole bag is somewhere between 6-10 cups.

I know I mentioned sticking to Subcools recipe as closely as possible, but is there anything important you think is missing? I'm trying to keep cost down, but if there's one or two more supplements that you think would really kick it up, like seabirds guano, crab meal, oyster meal, alfalfa meal or humic acids, etc, please let me know. Basically, my goal is to stick to as standard a recipe as possible to work for autos and not spend a bunch on different stuff.

Thanks for all your help so far!
