Hey all, I am totally new to organic gardening, but wanted to try my hand at it later this year with either Subcool's standard recipe or a slightly lighter version. I wanted to get folk's thoughts on my approach.
I know there are many very gifted organic growers on here with amazing custom super soil mixes, but since I'm new to this and I don't want to go overboard, I want to try to stick as close to Subcool's recipe as possible, while making sure it's not too hot for autos. What do you guys think about the below recipe? From what I've been able to find online, it sounds like most super soil mixes you find are geared towards photos and are heavier on the nitrogen. So, I thought of halving the amount of Blood Meal from 2.5 lbs(as would be standard) to 1.25 lbs. Are there the same concerns for the amounts of P and K in this recipe?
I plan on letting this cook for a good two months. Is there ever a point in time when super soil ages for too long and goes downhill?
Also, bear in mind that I plan on watering my plants with AN Root Tribe(for bacteria, fungi, myco, etc) for the first few weeks to make sure the soil gets a lot of life. Also, am thinking of still using GO Organics Cal-Mag as needed along with AN Bud Candy from time to time.
3 bags x 10-gallon Roots Organic Soil (For a total of 30 gallons or 105lbs of soil)
1 bags x 50L (35 lbs) Biobizz Light-Mix soil (Total of 35lbs)
1 bags x 30 lbs Organic Earthworm Castings (Total of 30lbs)
1/2 box 6 lbs Fish Bone Meal (3-16-0)
8 cups Kelp Meal
1/2 cup Dolomite Lime (“prilled” if possible)
1/4 cup Azomite (0-0-0.2)
1/4 box 5 lbs Blood Meal (12-0-0)
1/2 bag 4 lbs Happy Frog Bat Guano (0-5-0)
1/2 cup Epsom Salt
(Optional) Up to 25% Perlite (for extra drainage)
I would be growing in 3-gallon fabric smart pots. I've seen many folks use super soil on the bottom half to third of the pot, then fill up the rest with a lighter bagged mix. I've also seen some folks like @Eyes on Fire mix the super soil with a lighter mix 50/50 or so and just leave a decent-sized plug of light mix in the middle for the seedling to start in and grow into the mix. What do you guys think on these two approaches? I want to use either BioBizz LightMix or Roots Organic as the starter/lighter soil mix, in either case.
So, what do you guys think? Does this sound like a successful approach for an organic newbie?
