Lighting Sizing drivers, Series vs paralell - by BigSm0

Need help on what drivers to get. im planning on building 12 Vero29 gen 7 (D) for a 4x4. (3 rows of 4 cobs) looking around 700-900watts dimm

Thanks
What's the forward voltage on the vero's? I haven't used vero cobs yet or even looked into them. How many drivers do you want to use? I would guess to stay within the specs for the cob holders you would need 3 total.

I hope your not growing autos in there.

The hlg-600-36 would do 12 at 50 watts each. Or two hlg-320-36 from cobkits would work.

Hi guys im looking at turning my 300w marshydro into a cob i opened her up and this is what i got inside looking at any ideas would be amazing money aint really a worry so i could sell the light and make a small cob from scratch maybe?

I have the same light that was converted. A nice simple build with minimal cost would be 4 citizen 1212's. 2 cobs per driver in series wiring. You will go from 135 watts to 90 watts and have more light after your done. It's almost best to start here before getting deep into DIY. Learn a bit and whiteness the power first hand.

Hi @BigSm0 thanks for the quick reply,
I've got 4x citizen 1212's arriving in post but thats it what else would i need to buy to convert the light, and would it give me the same less or better light than the marshydro 600w?? Thanks for your help much appreciated

You would need holders, in series I like the bjb. Thermal paste for the back of the cobs, a bit of wire and some hardware to hold the cobs down. 90 watts would just be below as far as amount of light goes with a nice boost in the spectrum.

Thanks @BigSm0
Very sorry for being such a dummy but what is bjb and is there a website i could by most these things? Ive used ebay for cobs i think i might be trying to go in over my head here

This is why it's best to play with this before buying expensive parts. Learn how to do it and learn to love and appreciate the power of cobs. Before you know it you'll be surrounded in them like the millions of others. Bjb is a holder for the cobs. Model # 47.319.2033.50. They aren't expensive and already have a small built in reflector.

What I did on this similar built was stripped the paint and leds off the face. Then flipped it around and mounted the heatsink to the front side. It goes back with the same hardware. Where the heatsink was is a nice flat surface for the new cobs. Where it gets tricky is drilling holes for the new cob holders.

Wiring is a breeze. Just copy the diagram above for series wiring. Any more questions feel free.

Well jello there friends...Brand new very first post. I'm old school, and have been just blown away with Mephisto Autos and COBs, quite a long way away from picking a bulb and a hood for a HPS light like it used to be. So I have been trying to get to the bottom of all this. I currently have three 50v CLU048-1818s 90cri 2 x 3500k - 1 x 3000k...Here is my dilemma, what the hell Mean Well driver should I use? I wouldn't mind getting another 3000k 1818 if its appropriate. The whole thing is in a 3x2 area. I literally stole the cheap ass drivers out of a blurple module and cobbled (pun intended) this together with 3 crap drivers. Now its time for a real driver. So what to do? I have been making my brain smoke with all these crazy formulas and forward voltages and series/parallel, constant current v. constant voltage, reflectors and lenses? I would like to have them be the best they can be. HELP!!!!!

P.S. Anybody know where to get a heatsink like the one in that picture?
