Self watering Tray2Grow experiment 👀

Hello everyone I was happy with a grow using autopots and coco and also learned a lot through trial and error. I’m trying their Tray2Grow which doesn’t need an air base or air dome in the pot, the pot just sits on a capillary mat protected by a root control sheet. I have a 12 gal res on each side of the tent. You can use one big tank but I prefer two because it allows me to adjust feed between them if necessary for age differences in later grows. So if all goes well I won’t be hand watering nor worrying about runoff anymore, just mixing the cocktail. No idea how it’s gonna go but I’ll check in every weekend with an update.

5x5 tent with 4x4 630w light
Currently using GH nutes but switching to Canna A&B next week upon arrival
70/30 coco perlite Royal Gold Tupur mix
3 3gal pots and 1 5gal only because ran out of 3g lol so less than 4gal coco in the bag

Temp is 75 RH 73
Light schedule is 24/0 and DLI is 38
RO water with 5ml/g calmag + feed has EC = 1.8
Started in final pot and started feeding them the day they sprouted. Hand fed until today.
Plants are 6 days old, I only have pics from day 4 and today and put them next to each other to compare.

Interested to see how this works out for ya... grassroots and autopots each make a rectangle shaped bed to fit this that should hold around 28 gallons of soil or coco.

Dude that's a cool setup. So you put the nutes in the res? And the mats wick the water to the plants?

Also, might wanna be careful with the photo reel at the bottom of the pics.

And yes, you described it perfectly. Seems to be working as these are the biggest 9 day old plants I’ve ever had

12 days old today and 3 look funky because I started leaf tucking yesterday. I’ve always cut the first node off, trained and topped after 5. None of those for this grow, just going to let them have a stress free veg and strictly leaf tuck. Since the first post all I’ve done is check the ph in the res. And stare at the plants every 30 minutes of course
They paid the price of me feeding them real old nutes for 6 days and the new growth seems to be responding well to the new clean canna nutes. Thanks for stopping by see you in a few

Day 15 lots of leaf tucking and readjusting through the day, one advantage of no top feed is that I can smush the fan leaves down a lot further and they’re not in the way. Should have a better chance at an even canopy with no training. No tucking yet bottom left plant midnight mass, my dog tugged at her a little about a week ago and her stalk is fat but a little unstable so not messing with her at all. Top left plant Creme Tasmo self topped herself after the 3rd, never seen that before. I’ll let her grow but keeping a close eye for anything weird. Besides the self topping she’s weird anyways and I don’t usually show patience with weird beans but it takes no extra effort to let her sit there so we’ll see. Maybe hard to see but second pic is the self top.

For 2 years I followed advice to keep starting ec low around 0.6 (300 ppm) as well as keep wattage and DLI low and my 17 day old plants looked like this

This grow the seedlings received 2.0 EC (1000 ppm) and lights 24/0 with starting DLI approximately 38 and the 17 day old looks like this

Looking good so far. You definitely have a lot more growth with your new settings. Dang mang gettin it dialed early!

This setup looks so clean too. No hoses and lines running everywhere. You got any nute crust build up anywhere on it?

No the tank is super clean with the canna a&b nutes! I don’t even use a pump I just stir it once a day with my ec truncheon. And the trays are super clean inside so far too, no residue or film. The setup also comes with trays for microgreens and tomato spikes with wicks. I’ve seen plants started in solo cups that were never hand watered once. I’ve seen a grow with the full size bed that had about 25 gallons of BAS and fed tap water only. It’s great for me because growing in coco is growing hydroponically. Just a great rig all around in my opinion.
