Abstract

Recent reports show that fewer adolescents believe that regular cannabis use is harmful to health. Concomitantly, adolescents are initiating cannabis use at younger ages, and more adolescents are using cannabis on a daily basis. The purpose of the present study was to test the association between persistent cannabis use and neuropsychological decline and determine whether decline is concentrated among adolescent-onset cannabis users. Participants were members of the Dunedin Study, a prospective study of a birth cohort of 1,037 individuals followed from birth (1972/1973) to age 38 y. Cannabis use was ascertained in interviews at ages 18, 21, 26, 32, and 38 y. Neuropsychological testing was conducted at age 13 y, before initiation of cannabis use, and again at age 38 y, after a pattern of persistent cannabis use had developed. Persistent cannabis use was associated with neuropsychological decline broadly across domains of functioning, even after controlling for years of education. Informants also reported noticing more cognitive problems for persistent cannabis users. Impairment was concentrated among adolescent-onset cannabis users, with more persistent use associated with greater decline. Further, cessation of cannabis use did not fully restore neuropsychological functioning among adolescent-onset cannabis users. Findings are suggestive of a neurotoxic effect of cannabis on the adolescent brain and highlight the importance of prevention and policy efforts targeting adolescents.

Prof Moffitt said adolescent brains appeared "more vulnerable to damage and disruption" from cannabis than those of fully mature adults.
Reliable figures on cannabis usage among today’s British teens and twentysomethings are hard to come by.

But Prof Moffitt said there was growing concern in the US that cannabis was increasingly being seen as a safe alternative to tobacco.
“This is the first year that more secondary school students in the US are using cannabis than tobacco, according to the Monitoring the Future project at the University of Michigan,” she noted.
“Fewer now think cannabis is damaging than tobacco.

Im not sure you can compare a persons brain at thirteen. To that of the same person 25yrs later. As by genetic cognatization of life experiences and the degree's of variance this brings, or introduces to data, you would have to be very restrictive to be 0.095 level of confidence. Accordingly, we do not know the quality or quantity of delta 9 that was used by the women and men from the new Zealand group. "Im pretty shore they can only grow the short stuff out there" !

However;.......like some legal items on sale. It would be great if legislation could be brought forward as with other items on sale, as with other country's in the EU. To do this, you would have to tolerate it to semi-legislate for it. As with the 15% rule in the Netherlands, and "Age & ID based Restrictions" which work, and are for the most part, respected. It has been proved, when readily available, it becomes of little or no interest to the youth. NL, Portugal, Spain, 10 States In America, and many more, reduced consumption dramatically, in country's where use was low anyway, comparatively, with other legal and non legal items.

All that and i still remembered to vote for DubV's Bubbleicious in the August Comp !!

Yes; there is allways a price to be paid in life for the things we choose to do;......some choices where carfully thought out in the beginning and on reading it was found to be the lesser of all the other evils,......and no hangover or permanant addiction. A flexible nice looking and smelling natural thing. just one of mother natures medicinal profligate bounty's.

if we are comparing, then dodge this;.......

Out of all my friends who i grew up with from around 6-7yrs old. Only 2 rejected all other substances on the table at that age, and from then on. All the rest had prolonged affairs over the years with the "A" of this world. There choice. Only me and the one other have led successful "Business" lives". Have raised kids and all 6 kids between us. Who have gone to uni and passed. No trans genetic changes there then. The parents, paternal, have all passed degree's and shone out at them. These two males are the only two, that have had a better quality of life. Forty three years later. I do not regret shunning the "A's", and sticking with the natural kit untouched only by the hand of nature. Best "Effect" overall, "Stresses of Life" are in control, greater understanding of human nature. Health good because of it. Health not good in remaining member of group, 43yrs later.

The moral;...

There are a lot worse thing in life, than a slight memory loss at thirteen, less than the majority of "Non-Onset Users" cant remember more than 4% off their lives before the age of thirteen. And are not sure they want to remember after 38 !!............. AB afn Carma to all canna's..........

I always take these "studies" with a grain of salt . Unless you have identical people as test subjects , with no outside influence or difference in surroundings , you will have variables . Also , if a study is set upon to extract a result , it becomes easy to manipulate numbers and statistics to get the desired outcome .
