New Grower Placement of Accurate8 probe for "Accurate" pH Reading?

oh ok,well if its buffering it'll all be fine man. if not use a tick top coat of fresh soil with life and lime worked into it. but if ya did that already it'll be fine bro. your not having issues you said right? so all is right with the world then :D lol well sorta anyways lol

:smoking:OTD buddy, how goes it? I'm glad you picked up an A8 unit... I assume you read the package instructions as well? I've been using mine for a couple years now, and it's worlds better than the dubious run-off test and calculation, which is a crude estimation at best, and requires soak the hell out of the pot!... No doubt, the pH will vary with depth, root density (they affect proximity pH greatly), recent inputs, etc., so testing with it does have a certain amount of technique to be employed... the pH differences also can be attributed to the concentration effect that happens in media toward the bottom.. Think coffee in a cone filter, as fluid seeps down, it's getting more and more solutes accumulated in it...
--- keep it well stored and always clean; buff the tip up before using after it's been sitting around for day or so (oxidation); wipe off with a damp paper towel or something between uses/pots
-- absolutely, the right moisture level makes a big difference- not even dry-ish, and not freshly soaked, in so far as possible...
-- it needs to sit at least a couple minutes to stabilize.. as EoF mentioned, and you've seen too, once you move it or twist it, it'll jump some, then settle again..
-- don't test after recent inputs of goodies, it'll skew the reading...
... it works on the same principle as those skinny cheapie type probes, measuring conductivity differences between the two types of metal at the tip.. the A8 is just better, more robustly built.. the best units are about $200, and have blunt, bigger (pH meter type) tips = more root damage... better used as a slurry test, but one can't do a slurry of soil at depth, right? That's why I don't bother with one!

Hey-o @Waira, yeppers I read the instructions.
All the points you cite regarding it's use and care is 'xactly what I be doin' (-: So much so it's as though I were following your instructions all along.

The ideal moisture in the soil around the probe is the part that would seem to be the crucial aspect. Learning learning.

The plants currently in question are a couple o' photo's that again, look good!
So I'll couple the health o' the plants along with the specific environment at the times I check the pH and I'll eventually get the hang of it.

:pighug: I had no worries my friend, just wanted to get you squared away! It'll take some playing around with it to get a feel for it's quirks, strength and weaknesses,... but for the $$, it's a fine tool IMO! Oh, fairly compact soil texture at least helps,.. too fluffy doesn't seem to make good contact, or lots of perlite... When I place it in, I give about a half turn, which seems to make it easier and bite at the tip better.... (and no that's not porn talk! :hump:)
... you know, watching it closely, and really keeping your inputs pH'ed well goes a million miles toward prevention of troubles... I'm having to tweak my water pH for the KindSoil grow, as advised by the maker... and this time, with no other significant NPK inputs going in, I've had the chance to watch how the soil pH drifts, nearly day to day, and over weeks... Water hardness is insidious as a cumulative base, even when moderate in ppm (165) from tap,... At first, if I pH'ed down the water, it'd take the soil too low temporarily, so I didn't for about a month; then the pH started to creep up, despite the heavy feeding going on in the KindSoil at that point! So, back of the citric acid pH down, which works beautifully BTW, if even you need.... Now it's holding nicely week to week- :greenthumb: --whaaat, me worry?! :eek1:  .... EoF brudda Doit Guru! :pass:  :thanks:

Following the pH has been made confusing for me because of this:
Original soil was 6.7, 6.8 after 60 days cookin'.
Water is 7.5 from the tap, right at 8 after 24 hours for chlorine evaporation.

???

I've tried to keep track of cause and effect following the minimal topdressing that has been done with these two plants.

ferp

Good thing I'm already goin' bald cuz the headscratchin' resulting from watching this cannagrow has been intense!

I R A overthinker. I know this.
I R keepin' me mitts offn these last two plants and just gonna see how they end up.
