do you have a better one?
If you cook it it will most certainly destroy the alkaloids that get you high man. Why can't ya do what I did in the video? Or i f you prefer scrapping...?

I must interject here and say that limited heat during cooking will not destroy the good stuff right away but prolonged boiling will of course... If you choose to use a hot recipe then get a good digital thermometer and keep it under 160 degrees F and you should be fine... Of course it all depends on what you're starting with, are they dried or green harvested? If green, then the way smashed does it is much better than adding heat (also see my notes on this process about adding alcohol etc.) however if you have dried poppy straw (pods stalks and leaves but no seeds) using heat is almost necessary to extract the alkaloids... Also depending on whether or not you're going to smoke it, use or don't use the acidic additions. The vinegar/lemon juice is great for maximizing the effects of poppy straw tea but is unpleasant to smoke...

A good example of how heat tolerant opiates are is how junkies cook their heroin before injecting, bringing it to a boil for a few seconds (212 degrees F at sea level)

Thanx surffreak, good info. I also make poppy tea from pods I order off line, I never go higher than 120°F. I was under the assumption (by what I've read in the past) that heat & alkaloids don't work. Your reference to cookin it in a spoon & allowing it to boil is correct tho...

Also Smashed, if you look up the purification process (I won't get into it in detail here yet, just google it I'm sure you'll find plenty) The primary method of refinement is taking raw opium (sap only, right off the plant and dried) and boiling it for up to two hours before it is strained and reduced to the nice sticky black tar that comes overseas... This method makes smoking/eating the opium much more enjoyable taste wise and more potent... It is an art however, kind of like making good pot brownies, and is too much effort for me personally so I prefer your method Smashed with a few adjustments...

Well I appreciate that & will be googleing. I would love a way to refine my opium. I've hear of cream colored & reds before & would like to have a better product for myself. Poppies aren't easy to grow indoors & I want the best product for my labor.

I hear ya man, I'm just too worried about having sliced pods (all outside) where I live to get the real opium to refine, when you just go out and cut em down no one sees what you do after that... HeHe... And they are extremely weird and picky indoors but give em some crappy acidic soil and drought conditions outside and they flourish... WTF? Wish they were easy inside for sure... the spacing issues seem the biggest issue to me; Only way I know to counter that is by topping it to make more pods, but the potency goes down so I still don't know if it's worth it...

Just got my first flower! Turns out it was one of the regular breadseed types I got from the spice rack... Bright red and throwing pollen everywhere!

Was doing some research to cross reference what I was taught as a youngun about poppies and, after sorting through mounds of experiences, lab studies, and gardeners accounts, found conflicting views on when to harvest poppy pods. However one indicator has not changed, and that is the crown pointing upwards... What seemed to be the deciding factor in my research, is whether your going to make tea or opium. Going on your preferred method (SmashedByHashish) of extracting the tar being very similar to collecting the latex at max potency, I retract my statement about waiting an extra 2 weeks before harvest and have been convinced by science to go 3 weeks as the max wait before harvesting the latex... However if your goal is to make tea (usually what I have done), it seems beneficial to wait until later because the alkaloids are more readily extracted from this more mature/drier state.

I apologize if I accidentally misinformed you.
