Outdoor Outdoor UK, first time - journal & ref

Why not suck it and see with the soil amendments? You are obviously competent enough to diagnose and rectify any problems. Perhaps you can tell us what the remedial action might be on discovering that a seedling has been planted out into soil which is too nutrient rich? I'm a bit stumped for solutions which don't involve either digging it up or a new plant. If there is not enough you can always mulch it later I suppose, maybe there are other strategies. I suspect that if I were to leave anything out it would be the inorganic fertiliser pellets, as I would imagine that it could be replaced by liquid feeds (which would be a lot more labour intensive). I'm sure others also have a multitude of other suggestions, and at the end of the day there are no doubt many different ways of achieving a similar result.

Perhaps a good option would be to separate the bed into e.g. three sections, and try a different level of amendment in each one (low, moderate, high). That way you will get to find out what works best for you in your local soil and climate.

Please bear in mind that I grow in pots (I find this can be convenient for discretion) and tend to favour JI#1 throughout, with the majority of the nutrition added by way of liquid feeds. It's a much more labour intensive approach.

Its a tough one DrWho... I would struggle to know what to do other than, as you suggested, digging up the plant/replacing it etc. I had no idea that autos are (apparently) more sensitive to root burn etc. One trick I would apply, is more water. I know too much of that can cause issues but if the soil is free-draining, the nutrients will make their way down further with each watering and therefore dilute themselves naturally and gradually. I'm going to plant them out still but will make sure there is less of the compost/manure etc in their immediate vicinity than I was initially planning. They look really healthy at the moment and I want to trust my instincts for now. Will get them in on Friday after a good shower of rain on Thursday!
Incidentally, I planted out my guerrilla grow last night at sunset. Will revisit on Friday and get a snap to see if anything has changed - for better or worse!

Guerrilla grow: the Three Sisters.

Here they are out in the wild... All three were put into the last remaining pot I had spare (I was given germinated seeds and wasn't prepared!) which was too small. So, I decided to set them free guerrilla style not far from me where they should be left in peace. I dumped a load of garden compost onto cleared rocky/stony patch, then topped that will a load of John Innes seed compost, into which I planted the Three Sisters without disturbing their roots. There were also some bricks/large stones lying about, so I used them to help hold the soil in place and also act as night warmth for the roots etc. I gave them a good drink and will leave them to it. Some rain due in the next few days so will see how they cope.

Fingers crossed!

Having given my girls a thorough inspection and realising that they REALLY need more root space, I planted them out today. Time is flying so fast and I want them to have every opportunity to put some meat on during the veg growing phase. So out they went and here they are. They look measly now..

Hi Somerset , them thrippy things look like a right pain in the ... hope you can get rid , ive only ever had probs with spider mite but have only ever grown indoor before so im sure i will be asking you questions on how to oust them pesky thrips . well in answer to your question i sold all my indoor equipment which left a massive hole in my heart so with the items i have left like pots , neem oil , ferts , basically all the non electrical bits n bobs and with the sun latley i thought " why not buy some seeds " so i did , taking my 10 sweet seeds sweet mix + 1 free seed out of the 12 hour soaking in 2 hours time and putting them into the baby soil mix in baby pots in the boiler cupboard for tonight to keep em warm . my aim is to get seeds to go gorrilla mad next season as i should get my 3 x regular skunk tomorow so will be taking pollen to one or two females to get seeds . sorry i cant put a link up to my grow diary as i havent worked out how to do any of that yet lol i cant even work out how to post pictures !!!!
peace and light to you Somerset my friend

Hey Somerset

How are you, good I hope,

You know, it COULD be bigger at this stage, BUT it is your first go round, and you are leaps and bounds ahead of where I was my first time auto grow.

Keep it up, and encourage upward growth.

Great luck my friend
