Outdoor pollination question

Hello all. Since my indoor grow came to an abrupt end I decided to throw a couple of short stuff #1 seeds into some seperate outdoor pots. I have both a male and a female about 12" apart from one another. The male has more balls than a John travolta party and the female is basiclly just a short fat bud. Being this close would they pollinate naturally or should I help them along? I also have one photo plant which is a female kushage, what would happen if I pollinate the kushage with short stuff pollen? I've never attempted any pollination before so any thoughts to help me along would be greatly appreciated

Hey Steamer. It is possible for them to cross by themselves, but if that's what you are trying to do, I suggest giving them some help. Collect pollen from the male after the pollen sacs open up around 4 weeks. You can shake the mail over a plate or sheet of glass or a mirror. Then take a small artist brush or Q-tip and 'paint' the pollen onto the outside of the forming buds, around 5 weeks for the females. A little goes a long way. You can do this multiple times over several days to make sure you get a good pollenation.

Same thing with the photo cross as far as the pollenating. The seeds you get from crossing a photo x auto will be an F1 cross, likely to show very little % of autoflowering plants, although it is possible. You would have to then grow those out crossing only the early flowering ones for several generations to get fully autoflowering plants again. This is how breeders take favorite photo strains and make them Autos. There is also a ton more info on all of this in our Breeding Section. here, mate. Check it out although I think you have been there already. https://www.autoflower.org/forum1/forum8/

At that close you'll be lucky to have a single calyx sans seed.

Thank you so much. Just one question I forgot to ask and did not read about is how long will a male survive after making his balls?

As far as I know it's pretty much the same as females, but after you get the pollen there is no need for him anymore.

I've crossed some autos outdoors i just harvest a few seeds today to test for ripeness...Squid has the right idea about collecting the pollen and than brushing it on your female... I would just leave my male indoors if you could and let the female do its thing outdoors...The only reason i like my males indoors is its easier to collect more pollen cause outdoors you have wind and once they drop pollen that shit blows everywhere kinda hard to collect pollen when most of it gets blown away hahah...

Neostar has a good point. If they're in container and not the ground then you can just pull the male inside when it's time to collect his dues. :D

haha. Thanks man. If you're just making simple crosses honestly you can just pull that bad boy up from the pot or ground and still collect pollen from him no problem. Just make sure he's ready first. And hell even then you can put it in a cup of water for up to a week and it will still grow and open pollen sacs so you can get paid.

If you're breeding using scrutinizing selection then you would want to grow it out to see how he grows, smells, tastes and smokes. Yes, I said tastes and smokes. You wan to get to know what you're breeding through and through.

The pollen collection is good for the future bit if the female has flowers and the males dumpong shes pollinated. I agree theres little chance theres a seedless flower if they have been sitting out doors together. If you want to collect pollen move him indoors to collect. Or give him a shake over her, the photo if you want, then pitch him.
