Hi guys,

I have a couple photo period plants in pre-flower. One is a Bubba Kush and the other is Nevilles Haze. They have both been main-lined.

I have read varying posts on removing large fan leaves on the which can help light pass down to lower leaves. Will doing this affect flowering negatively?
Also, I get that its important to remove the lower growth to prevent energy wasted on forming popcorn buds. How many nodes do you keep your on each stem to get the thickest colas? There is probably an association between the number of nodes and the thickness of colas and a sweet spot therein.

Every plant will be different mate so its down to your judgment!
From my experience and what I've seen, heavy shade leaf defoliation is a win win, the next leaves in line just take over.

With trimming lower flower growth,
Try to imagine how tall your crowns will be in the final weeks and then estimate the penetration of your light source, what looks left in the dark or small and spindly should be good to go, but remember less is more you can always trim more you can't put it back.

A habbit I try to keep is to trim in sessions spread over a relatively large period of time like a week or month rather than every couple of days, to avoid prolonged stress.

Test how the strain reacts and go from there..take off small stuff and bottom big fans of stuff blocking bud growrh..some say the big fans are good and water storage ..so remove also makes the plant more dependent on the right habitat for optimal growth.

I've never seen a plant die from defoliation and have defoliated hundreds of fan leaves from one pound outdoor girls myself. I've heavily defoliated the large fan leaves from the top down along with spindly weak lower bud site growth indoors and yielded a modest 1g/PW.

I also enjoy letting plants go natural as a comparison to training and trimming techniques and have heard of growers who defoliate not a single leaf from the plant but rather add low hanging or side light to turn the popcorn bud into larger nugs.

Its each to their own, some will recommend the opposite to another but here's how I learnt simply from an elder;
If the growth coming from the node has a leaf or two that are pretty well formed and ready to grow take the respective fan leaf from that node, so on and so forth.

Hope this helps mate.

Thanks @orrganic & @DABaracuss.
I have overcome my fear of defoliating since I started main-lining. Its amazing to see how resilient these plants can be. I have never done it in pre-flower/flower though and have heard that they can get very stressed during this time and I'd end up with a hermie....

I always defoil every plant I grow auto photo doesn't matter either way the plant will make more leaves then needed so just make sure you keep what you need

How many leaves would you recommend?:pass:
It's all strain and light dependent, what's your light my light penetrates 4 ft onto canopy, so I only take off what I have to that completely covers a budsite I haven't had larf in forever but I am a photo guy and we clean to top 3 nodes pre flip. On autos let stretch COMPLETELY and then clean off what you think is right just don't l let any wasteful branches
