I've seen the argument against autos that you don't get to grow them actually, since you can't take clones, lock down a mother plant, fertilize as heavily, and that it isn't really growing. Well I argue that autoflowers are more "truly" grown than doing fancy photo tricks. There is something very...instinctual (not the right word, but close, i mean like it feels like what our ancestors 3000 years ago would do) like doing crosses and collecting seeds for the next harvest. I feel like this really is "true" growing. Always up to chance, always thinking ahead, it captures the spirit of farming in it's truest form and connects us to our collective roots as humans. Just my 2c.

I also have heard the same anti auto talk. the same eople also say the same stupid things about femmed seeds. I do my own femmed seed production because I use so many seeds in my bubbly tank that It just makes sence for me to make my own femmed seeds. I just wanted to throw in some info: yes you can clone off of the super autos. Just cut the bottom four branches off and do your regular cloning style they clone just fine. I have done so with Super Cali Haze. I haven't tried with some of the others but may do so this year.

i like autos and all but honestly........ there is a much larger selection of genetics with photo and are more easily predictable genetic wise. I've grown both and prefer photo but wanted to learn how to grow more of an "expert" set of plants which i consider autos to be. if you dont know anything about growing and you just willy nilly grow autos you will have bad results compared to a closely match photo strain. now that i have autos on lock down i will be switching back to photos myself and going for the larger yields that i know i can obtain with stable mothers and cloning. just my :2cents:

What I like about the AF's is that the whole geneopool is under some serious development. The photo's have been in the hands of big seedbanks that have been playing nasty games up until now.. Its good to see something fresh inspiring new private and commercial breeders to play with. These days the grower forums are all up and major MANY people are contributing in the genetic development of cannabis. Its kind of like the open source movement in computer science..

Af's have some particular traits of their own to do with their grow style, there is not much difference 'effect-wise' when compared to photo's just because the first landrace af's where lowsy ine CB's..

If those traits fit the grower or not, that is up to him.. I find them to be better for outdoor op's and quick harvests, but I think most growers that stick to them because they like the earthy feeling to them.. (notice how most people here work soil) I think the entry of ruderalis into the human breeding op's has somehow formed a community of decent people (the forums are proof of that) that are naturally drawn in by the wonderful aspects of creation since the auto's are still at their beggining.

In life - The people that put down something new are called dicks. The people that stick up for the things that are being put down by 'dicks' are people with fair intentions.. Or at least those are ..my :2cents:

I like AF's 'cuz they're the first and only MJ I've ever grown and have no comparison. BUT.. I think they're GREAT for they're -mostly- compact size, the speed from start to finish, and the fact that I don't have to mess around with light schedules. The perpetual harvest and easy seed production are cool aspects.
AND, Photo forums have a less agreeable cool-person : asshole ratio. I haven't met an asshole yet in this forum.
:smokebuds:

oh yah thats why i left rollitup and grasscity nothing but assholes who were in it to try and bank 150-200k a year........

i agree 100 percent!

I like Autos for three reasons:

1. Can grow perpetual outside all year long!
2. Many stay short (which is my preferred personal growing style)
3. Many photo growers only knowledge of autos is from years ago and they haven't kept up with science and technology. Its fun and easy to impress them (i.e make fun of them).

I got involved with autos about 5 years ago when they were first coming on the market. At that time there was only the Joint Dr., Low Life and not much more. I became interested in them because of their stealth and quick growing. It has been amazing to watch how far them have come in that short time. Some of today's auto strains are rivaling photos in their potency and the yields have been steadily increasing. Serious photo development has been going on since the late 70s. Imagine where autos will be after 25 years of development.

For bigger operations where there is room to maintain mothers, do cloning, etc. I think photos make better sense. But for small stealth grows, it's hard to beat autos. I do see one area of autos that could become an issue in the future, and that's home breeders. Autos are so easy to breed that a lot of people without full breeding knowledge are undertaking breeding projects. I see people breeding to plants from fem seeds and that makes me uneasy. I also see unstable seeds being rushed to market simply to cash in. Some of the big seed banks have been the biggest offenders in this respect.

I have been a photo grower for at least 30 years. What attracted me to autos was the possability of continuous grow in a SOG Bubbly Tank. No more needing three different rooms to nave a coninuous grow. One for the clone mothers. One for the groth state and one for the flowering. With the autos it is throw them in the tank when their first real leaves show themselves. Under 20/4 light. Grow en until they are ready to switch to flowering under 20/4 light. foower them under the same light and harvest them when they are done. Then just replant them from seed no cloning. Htch and plant.

Yes there are some disadvantages to the continuous grow. You have to leave the nuits the same for the whole grow. Not really much of a problem cause they flower fine with nitrogen on em. I can't use bloom boosters. Never found one I really liked anyway.

I wonder why Muddy is so uneasy about breeding to Fem seeds. I never found any problem with it myself.

I agree with most of what Muddy says about seeds. I find the phenos are all over the place. I have had no luck trying to breed Mi5 to a stable pheno. This is a real drag cause bubbly tank used for SOG works best with a single colon type (Bud on a stick). If I could find seeds with single colon buds I would be so happy. Cobra is the closed I have found so far. Yes I make my own femmed seeds. When you go through a00 seeds a month you have too as they end up beinng your highest cost. I can't do much about the electricity costs but I can lower my seed costs.

Yes I still grow the big sativa photos outside in the Summer. I like the pot and I like the yield. Types like Super Cali Haze are starting to creep into my outdoor grow.
