I know there's a difference in root types and the one's out of soil die when transplanted in water unless you bombard them with air bubbles. Water type roots cannot take up nutrients from the soil, they need to grow soil type roots first. I didn't say it was impossible, but doing this can cause issues.
If the amount of roots was the issue in the tub, you could have trimmed half or 1/3 away and you would have gained some space again.
