New Grower New Grower Having Problems! Day 39

And to who asked about the worm castings? I unfortunately got them at Walmart for $10 for 20lbs. Was this a mistake?

If I bought something like worm casings (presumably, prime food for insects) from Walmart, the first thing I'd do would be to run some pyrethrin, Spinosad or other harmless (particularly, since it will be washed out) pesticide into it and let it sit saturated for a while, then I'd rinse/flush it intensely.

So what do you think my first course of action is here? Do you believe it’s magnesium def (is that what it was?)? Should I go and give epsom salt a try? Could it hurt if that “was not” the problem?

@Tim Miller dude you don't need a soil ph tester (I've never needed one), your way over complicating this if you go down that road and spending cash for no reason...

the possible reason for the diff is that the soil is acting more like a hydro coco grow due to your amendments to the soil and your growing under LED's which we all know has a habit of making the lady's consume calcium and magnesium... one question I have is are the stems near the top of the plants turning a slight purple?

This is really nothing to much to worry about and is super easy to fix... (plus a good lesson in growing)

How would I go about fixing this if this was in my G'room -

first remove the leaves that are damaged by the diff. By doing this after the next few feeds you know If you have got on top of it. Those damaged leaves will not turn back to green... keep an eye on the new growth.

Now my next step is controversial... I would then do a mini flush through with a microbe tea just in case its a salt build up and a lock out. Flushing about the volume / two thirds of the pot or near about's (I don't Ph that water, don't want to kill those microbes)... I will measure the PPM's and the Ph of the run off from this flush, taking a sample from the start and a sample from the last drops coming out from the pot. This will give me a good idea of what going on in the medium. If my PPM's on the first sample comes out lower than going in I'm possibly under feeding. Vice versa if the PPM's are higher than going in you know your over feeding and may begetting a slat build up causing a possible lock out... your also looking to have a run off Ph of about 6.3.

To combat the Mag Diff I would then foilia spray for a couple of days with Epsom Salt (cheap as chips from any garden store) and the magic spray Overgrow by opticfiola... a must have weapon for the G'room, fixes most small diff's on the spot and a great foilia feed for your system... (I'm sounding like an advert here)

On the next feed I may increase the cal mag by a few ml if i think I've been under feeding. If I've been over feeding I will knock back those PPM's by half to one third and slowly increase the PPM's over then next few feeds if needed (which for me is the next tank re fill)

If you do want to spend some cash I highly recommend that you put your money with the best of the best Ph pens by Blue Labs (most other brand are inferior). Also if you want to go down my road of the G'room Weed Nerd you need a PPM / E.C pen... my recommendation is get them separate, Blue labs does a 2 in one unit. Don't get that one, the Ph probe that come with it breaks easily at the cord. I've gone through 3 in one year (at about £70 each...ouch). Buy the pens.

It was me that was asking about the worm castings... reason is that I'm having a similar issue in my G'room with some clones and I'm pinpointing the cause. If we had the same brand it may have got me thinking with another avenue to look down. I do think the main reason for my Mag diff in my G'room is that I've change coco brands.

here a great newbie vid on folia spraying with the super basics

one thing i forgot to say is that most deficiencies you see in your G'room are Mag / Cal / N. they are the most common due under/over feeding, coco locking out cal/mag and LED's making the plants Cal/Mag hungry... If your getting other deficiencies (which I believe you are not) your probably got a big Ph problem and THE buffering of the medium is way out.
I would say most of the time when it comes to deficiencies its a Ph problem in the medium.

I'm with Slater on the PH pen, blue labs has been bang on - cost more bucks than the 5 minute yellow ones you can get on Amazon - but will pay back for sure as long as you look after it & follow their cleaning/storage instructions.

I've been running Calmag thru out my grow and will continue to do so - no sign of any deficiencies yet. I've got a diary going if you want to check that out. I'm using Autopots & coco - during veg let my PH swing from 5.7 - 6.1 then PH down/repeat. In flower I'm 5.9 - 6.1 then PH down/repeat.

Started nutes at 1/3 strength and slow increased to just under full strength as of now.

The only reason I was looking into a soil ph tester was cause it was recommended I get one in this post.

Could you elaborate a little on this mini flush with a microbe tea? What exactly is that and where can I find it?

I checked the ladies this morning before work and she is def getting worse by the hour . So I need to do something. Gonna pick up some Epsom salt to have on hand.

Here are a few pics from this morning. It’s def spreading. All three plants needed feeding so I decided to just feed with plain distilled water this morning until I figure out my next course of action.

I'd start with Calmag for sure, but first check your PH is around 5.8 - 6 otherwise you'll be facing lockout - if your PH is out of whack you'll end up chasing your tail. On one of my earlier grows some of my veg leaves looked just like these, I was growing under LED and PH was up and down due to an auto doser i had that was running incorrectly whilst i was away. Got it under control, junked the doser and added regular calmag and it sorted it self out.

Confession i had a yellow £3ph pen along with £30 of cal/ph 4/7 fluids,it broke no surprize,i grow in biobiss light so only random ph once in a blue moon.soil probe a green thing 99p pretty rubbish.blulab acurite 8 are the nuts but super spendy.reading first post only 20% coco not enough i dont think to use a much lower ph in.i think we need proffesional help,im not at all confident of giving any further advice for fear of doing more wrong.im on me fone so cant find me way site around to well, thinking the infirmary is best place for this, but they hours behind timezones.
Good luck n keep er lit.

Would Epsom salt from the pharmacy be sufficient? It would be a few days before I could get some shipped in and it may be too late by then.
