Well I was planning on using FFOF this year but after reading such bad reviews about it I need a new mix. I am thinking promix potting soil or bx perhaps some sunshine mix #4, what else should I mix in with it? I have some amazing soil in my garden I can possibly do a 50/50 mix with for nutrients? Anyone have any good soil recipes based around promix/sunshine?

Hiya JJ05. Those mentioned are great if can find them in your area. I have heard some good things about Jungle Growth as well. And they sell that at Lowes. Not sure where you are so that might not help at all. Not sure about the garden soil it could be too much. Basically anything with the same or similar mix as Promix is wonderful.

It is considered a soil-less mix. It is mostly Sphaghum peat moss, then perlite(you could add more if you wanted), dolomite lime for ph stabalization, and some type of mycorrhizal for your good fungal organisms that thrive in your root zone. Sometimes there is a wetting agent but I am not positive. It's not bad to have either way. There are no nutrients which is great for Autos.

I will be making my own by purchasing those ingredients separately and mixing it myself. Hope this helps.

Thanks man. I am going with promix. Since its a nutelss soil should I feed sooner than I originally planned?

I do believe that with Promix, yes you can start earlier with real low doses. Don't quote me on that. Muddy is the man to ask for that. Shoot him a PM if he doesn't see this soon.

heres my mix it works great,

1 cup of espoma starter plus with mycorrizae per 1 gal of miracle grow african violet potting mix (PH of 6.0)
1 cup of espoma starter plus with mycorrizae per 1 gal of cow manure

Heres the layering part as you want your plants roots to hit the cow shit when it needs it

sprinkle in some one the potting mix mixture then fill 1/3 of container up with cow manure mixture then fill rest of way up with potting mix mixture water thoroughly and let sit for 3 days, by then if you have left them in the dark, mycorrizae wil be visible and you are ready to plant, it is safe to plant directly in this mix with no ill effect.

What do you mean mycorrizae will be visible.I'm currently useing promix organic with mycor in it but whats the visable part? Your mix sounds good but the african soil would cost to much for a big grow but for a few plants it sounds good.

well your promix might not have enough myco in it for it to be visible, but you can see white fuzz growing if left in the dark, also if you plan on using mycorrizhae don't use tap water as it has chlorine in it and the chlorine will kill the myco, i dont have to worry about this because i have well water. Yeah for big grows it doesnt make sense ( i only grow in 1 gal milk jugs) but there are some cheap african violet potting mixes out there too.

This mix is basically like feeding your plant filet mignon

you can get 12 gallons of the african violet potting mix for 20$ and if 1/3 of your final product is cow shit you can stretch this mix into 16 gallons for around 20$, not terribly expensive but works for me

I use sunshine mix #1, because I can get assloads of it local. Less then half a mile. Use it straight out of the bag with a good nute and some cal mag. It is that easy.

I think I am going to stick with promix and use FDs Fox Farm feeding sched. What ya think?

Never used promix but have used fd's ff nute schedule-works great and gives you a place to start. It does end around week 6 so if you have a strain that goes longer then that you'll have to improvise with your own nutes schedule.I followed it for my first grow of cobra and liked it and so did the plants, now on my 2nd and 3rd grows and improvising a little more on my own. One of the many things i've learned here is to watch your plants and they'll tell you what they like and don't like in the nutes department.
