Does anyone have a recommendation for which phone works best with Photone app? Are the new iPhones best or will slightly older ones work fine?

I have to get a new phone anyways, mine is so old I can't access the app store anymore. Figure a par meter is just as expensive and Photone apparently works just as well.
If you are looking for a phone upgrade, I have found the iphone 14 a decent sweet spot, go pro if you want the extra camera, or not if you don't. As to whether the Photone app will work, first you need to know whether the software has been calibrated for your model of phone, and that, at least on my 14 is announced by the app when you set it up. If your phone is calibrated, and you can get the app onto it, you are probably good until you upgrade for other reasons.

IMO, you definitely do not want to buy a cheap so called par meter, and you do not need to spend the bucks for a real one. I bought a cheap one and it was not just a waste of money, it compromised several grows by underestimating light levels by more than half (i.e setting my light level at more than twice what it should be). It could have been worse, but it definitely caused harm, not to mention many hours of head scratching to try to figure out the symptoms that the meter was telling me were not a light problem. Photone is IMO a far better option, especially if you have a recent phone that the developers have specifically calibrated the app for, which has been done for most recent Iphones and Androids. The test results indicate that with any of the three phones reported on in the test, including the 14, the app is closer than 2% to what professional par meters measure, which is far more accurate than a grower actually needs. To add further motivation, the app calculates DLI automatically.

You can use a paper diffuser, or buy one that does better with direction that light is coming from, but I just cut a chunk of the diffuser of an led bulb and sit that centered over the camera (I had a few around from the ones I stripped for my grow lights). It seems to work perfectly, cost me nothing, and I did not have to wait for delivery of an official one. The app seems to automatically correct for the light loss when you place a diffuser, so I don't think that minor differences in light transmission are a biggie.

Good luck with it, if you learn anything let us know. :pighug:

When I bought my Growers Choice ROI 680 there was a guy on YT that did a vid with an Apogee par meter, with the push stick on wheels. He had a 4”x4” grid and mapped the light at 6”, 8”, 12” and 24” height. He also went through every dimmer position.
I’ve had the light 4 years, need to watch the video again.
