More than one design, but basically they keep solos from tipping over when they get top heavy, and they ensure air pruning of all roots because the entire cup is suspended in air. I just use plastic nut containers with a hole in the lid:What is a solo support?
Is that to like hold the plant up on the lid in the middle of the rubbermaid? Because I was talking last night about growing in a 27 gallon tote and then I was thinking like man that plant would definitely get heavier than the lid could handle.
The runoff collects in the jar, and I remove it with a vaccuum. Any plastic container with a lid big enough would work. You could also put multiple holes in a tote lid to support several solos if you wanted to.
