I'm growing some TD Auto's outdoors atm but the weather is shit and I may be lending my mates tent haven't got a clue what lights they have got most probably a HPS not sure what the watt is atm! what would anyone recommend for like 2 3 plants ? and would it be alright for veg or.... ?

400 to 600 watt should be enough for two or three plants.

Okay sweet! obvs auto's have a short veg period but if my mate hasn't got a MH light would you say a HPS would be alright ?

Depending on the money you want to spend you can go with several different options. LED, T5, HID. I currently have 6 plants going under this package and have been very pleased. http://www.greners.com/i/packages/g...rformance-grower-600w-grow-light-package.html
But you can find cheaper. The Hortilux Eye bulb is pretty expensive but supplies a good spectrum. If you only want to purchase one bulb, go with HPS. A good one will provide enough blue spectrum to get you through veg just fine. You can get away with T5 as well, I use this for my veg tent http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003E776OO/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 but you are gonna need to buy a seperate set of bulbs for flowering. It only comes with blue bulbs for veg but they work real well. As for LED, I will let someone else chime in on that as my LED knowledge is very limited.

You can probably get by on the cheap if you wanted to use 400W with only 2 or 3 plants but if you are going to purchase the equipment you may as well spend the extra hundred dollars or so and get 600W that will give you good coverage should you decide to add a couple more plant to the room. They say anywhere from 50-100W per foot squared so 400W would give you roughly 4-8 feet and 600 roughly 6-12 feet.

Right okay well my mate has just finished a grow so I think everything is all there tbh light's carbon filter ect.. they grew photo's but when they bought the tent it came with a whole set up so I assume they have got HPS's can I use the HPS throughout the grow ? thanks!

Yes, you can use HPS throughout the entire grow.

one more thing! shall I keep the HPS about 5 inches away from the plants all the time ?

It all depends on heat. I run mine about 16 inches with an aircooled hood.

That is 600W mind you, 400 will be a little closer.
