As the title says let's talk compost!

Does anyone cultivate their own compost / vermiculture to use in their mixes?

I have horses and have an endless supply of horse shit, hay, straw, etc. I also raise red worms and am getting some nice castings. I hot compost the manure and this is what it looks like after 3 weeks. Nice, earthy, crumbly. I'm now going to let it cure for a few more months before I put it in any soil. Continue to turn it and break down any remaining thick chunks.

for apartment dwellers like me, I compost but it doesn't amount to much and I don't bring it inside. But I have found that allowing worms to live in the peat part of my mixture can turn it into black gold. So for instance, peat is about 25% of my soil mix. So the bedding for the worms is 100% peat. The worms live in the peat until I need it for the soil mix and then they get removed and get new peat and I get the old peat which is black gold.

My unsolved problem is composting and then reusing my pot soil. It takes longer to break down the old soil and roots than it does to grow an auto in it. So you see my problem. Takes lots of space to store the old soil waiting for it to break down. And it gets cold here in the winter so not much action then. I've been dumping it in a tub outside and adding composted kitchen scraps. My kitchen scrap operation is very simple. I keep a 5 gal bucket inside and when it gets filled or bugs I dump it into a 5 gal outside. And I dump outside from the one 5 gal bucket into another until I have a pretty good compost and then dump it in the bin with the old pot soil. But the outside tub is filled and overflowing and still not certified pot safe. So this next indoor crop soil is probably going to just get dumped in the woods.

So I turned my 2 new piles today and wetted them down lightly again. The steam rolling out of them after a few days in incredible.

I turned my curing compost. It's so rich and clean smelling. I hope to cure it for another month to continue breaking it down.

I haven't really been working with mine enough. Usually I would be watering it turn up more often and then working it into the yard somewhere. Last couple years I've just been adding to my pile and turning it over a couple times a year.
