"Oh, hello there. I will stay behind, to gaze at the sun.The sun is a wondrous body. Like a magnificent father! If only I could be so grossly incandescent!"
—Solaire of Astora, reflecting on the sun while staring at it in the Undead Burg (Dark Souls II)

Hey AFN! Praise the Sun!

Dropped off the radar after my last journal. Bought a Da Buddha Vaporizer and got lost in my work and stash of weed. [emoji14]

Since then I grew a clone from that last cheese and just recently got it jarred up for curing. Tried coco and had good results, but it's very touchy!

Sadly, my Mars II started to lose diodes one by one. They literally melted! I still think they're good lights, but the 700 definitely needs more/better fans. But that's a topic for another thread. Now on to the matter at hand!

This time I'm trying out my brand-spanking-new LEC 315 Sun System unit. I literally just got it today!

And I'm doing 4 Dutch Passion autofem seeds:

1. Blueberry - This is my girlfriend's favorite, and I like it more than most of what I've grown (she says it enhances the tastes of food). First to sprout and hardiest looking seedling, hopefully foreshadowing a great plant.

2. Blackberry Kush - Wanted something more indica-heavy in my stash, and it seems to have awesome coloring. This sprouted right after the blueberry, similarly sized.

3. White Widow - WW was the first herb I ever smoked, so paying respect to the old days. This was the smallest seed and I wasn't sure if it would ever pop. It was last to sprout but looks to be on track.

4. AutoEuforia - THE ODDBALL! Wanted this strain for uplifting positive effects. This seed sprouted TWICE: literally two plants from the same seed. I've looked it up, it happens, some cut it, some let it go... I'ma let them do their thing, see what happens.

Alright, so 4 Dutch Passion strains at 7 days after sprouting, and a Sun System LEC 315 with 3100k bulb.

Couldn't source my usual bagged soil, so I ended up mixing a few things. For the most part it's half Happy Frog and half Dr. Earth Pot O' Gold. (Get it? DR. FROG!) Then added some coco and perlite to lighten things up, plus a handful each of dolomite lime, Epsom salts, and myco inoculant. This all went into 3 gallon smart pots, which were watered with AACT made from the soils themselves to help "wake up" the micros. A week later, I planted the soaked and popped seeds into shallow holes dusted with inoculant.

All the seeds sprouted on July 1st. They sat under my Mars II 700 until today.

It has so much more radiant heat than my LED did, which I think is a good thing if you can manage the temps. Speaking of temperature...

Recently relocated my tent to a more strategic place. Placed it in a corner on a wall that has a floor-level air vent.

Modified a shoebox into an air duct.

So now I've got cool air constanly blowing into the corner my tent draws air from (I keep my central AC fan on constanly. Helps keep my 2 story place consistent temperature-wise). I think there's something about having cool soil, moderate air, plus warm sunshine that makes plants happy.

There will be plenty of picture updates. Let's see what an LEC 315 can do! Praise the Sun!

Day 12

Good growth over the past three days. These plants are pretty sturdy for being 12 days from sprouts. When I tug on the leaves, the stems don't bend much. With the true leaves showing up, they went into the middle of the light's footprint. Lowered the light by about a foot as well. Down to 32" above the tallest plant.

Gave the plants their first real watering. Just a light mix of molasses, seaweed, and a touch of humic acid.

Checked the runnoff pH and it came out to 6.5! Very happy about that as I've had pH problems with Dr. Earth in the past. Hoping the added dolomite keeps this pH balance going the whole grow!

No post watering droop either! Very pleased thus far. [emoji41]

Day 14

Two weeks from seed and everything is going smoothly. Finally getting the temperature and humidity to where I want them most of the time. Early morning gets a bit warm as the tent sits on an east-facing wall of my house. Turned the exhaust up a bit and it helped even out the morning heat.

So far, I'm really digging this light. The full spectrum looks and feels a lot like sunlight. I enjoy sitting and hanging out with my plants. It feels like an outdoor garden, with more comfortable temperatures. And it makes for some relaxed photography, as I get to capture my plants in their everyday lighting while still being able to appreciate their colors, without having to toggle off/on a different set of lights.

Thus far, the plants seem to have thicker tissues from my previous LED grows. The leaves and stems feel more resilient and leathery than my recent crops. I don't know yet if that's desirable or just an odd effect of using CMH lighting, but now I'm interested.

Guess my pictures from last night had fluorescent white balance going on. (Lil too blue purple) I can't figure out what to set it to, lol. Comes out either too blue or too orange.

Great looking start Doctor! I know exactly what you mean by that real sun feeling, these lights are bright, warm, and comfortable to sit around. Mines a bit high now in the new setup, so I worry about my eyes a little now, but when I was in a short scrog, i'd sit and smoke with my plants longer than I always meant to, lol. Can't go wrong with DP, theres a real good vibe from the blackberry kush smoke reports.

Thanks camaro! Yeah man, it's pleasant to just sit and hang out with the plants. I rock a sugegasa and sunglasses when I'm in the tent.

So stoked for the blackberry kush!
