Grow Mediums Indi's ongoing Uc-Rdwc mephisto thread.

Hey I was just noticing something with your system, with your bulkheads being so high up on the bucket do you have a lower drain valve or a bottom suction fitting inside one of the buckets? That was one of my issues is that I cant just drain my system all the way, there is always the last bit of water in the bottom below the bulkhead. I have thought of a couple different ways to deal with this, first what I have done in the past is just drain it as much as I can then fill again with plain water and drain and repeat, then on the last one actually get in there with a cleaning cloth and get any of the remaining salt out with that. Second I have thought about trying a bottom suction fitting to attach to the inside of my bulkheads, however I don't know if I like the idea of the pump sucking up the sediment on the bottom and recirculating that. So how are you getting all the water out of your RDWC my bro

sorry bro i completely missed that comment..
I'm not to sure if this is what you are meaning and this will obviously be different with yours.. First i drain it via the control res hose coming out of the chiller. Then..
do you see how i have the pump connected, I simply close the valves and remove the pump and use it to drain the res's to the bottom then i run thin bleach and water through the system. then remove the res's wash them all bleach and wash everything else pipework in the control bucket wash through with tap water stand and air dry. is that what you are meaning bro?

Oh i see ,I should read properly haha , Well if there is sediment on the bottoms of your rez's then your not cleaning the system enough or you adding way to much of everything. proper maintenance is key.

Yeah I guess sediment is the wrong word, I guess I said that because there is a layer of crap in the bottom of my buckets right now. But you are right there shouldn't be any sediment per se, maybe some root matter but hopefully not lol. I also forgot that you have a chiller. What I was getting at is that when you turn the drain line on from the chiller it is only able to suck the water from the piping you have at the bottom right? So when you turn on your pump and chiller drain line on and open and it is done sucking the water, are you left with the water that is below the bulkhead fitting? I am always left with about an inch or so of water at the bottom where the bulkhead fitting is and it starts sucking air vs water. Does that make sense?

I actually turn the pump off before it gets that far as not to destroy the pump to quick sucking the water.and then yup drain away with the pump.
Don't let the pump suck air.

Not sure how he does it but my rdwc bulkheads are about an inch above the bottom of my buckets. I use a basement subpump that gets it down to an 1/8th in and then a wet shop vac to get the rest.

Thanks Indicalvoz! Actually picked it up from Vader Og' s YouTube channel. He recommends the little giant pump. It's about $100 on Amazon and well worth it.

Cool man i have actually heard of that pump i might go check it out again ,i only run a small system but i love to learn ;) cheers bro :)
