Just purchased a General Hydroponics Hydrofarm to use for one of my plants. This is supposed to be a complete set and i just need to add a light. Only problem is that i dont know anything about hydroponics but i wanted to use this setup as my starter. Do you guys have any tips on how to use this system or what equipment i may need.

You mean the water farm?

What I would do... after many trials and stunting plants, etc... is start with your water and something like Clonex. Put your Clonex to around .3 EC (300ppm at .5 conversion). Once it gets a couple leaf sets, bring that up to say .6-.8 EC. Keep that going until you see flowers. Then, add some regular nutrients. Keep it at around 1-1.2 EC or even a little less. I use Jack's Professional line. The Clonex solution is great for getting a great root system started. Just make sure to measure the EC of the solution. I recently started a round of seeds and mis-measured and the EC was around 2... almost 1000ppm of clonex. That stunted the plants big time and they're really teeny, just starting to flower. I'll hopefully just make some seeds from them and start again. But, it did set my grow back a bit...

so i am thinking i need to purchase another meter in order to measure ec and ppm.

Yea, definitely necessary to be able to measure EC and pH. When you see a couple leaf sets you could also add a super mild nutrient solution along with the clonex, just don't overfert which is easy to do. Keep 'em around .8 EC at seedling stage.

can i use my fox farm trio for this unit?

As long as you get the hydro formula and not the soil formula, you should be good.

Got a recommendation on a ec/ppm meter i already have a pH meter.

Definately as Med Man says get those meters, also will be worth getting some EC and PH Calibration fluid to ensure your meters are always accurate. Im not really sure about your particular complete set up but an aquarium heater to keep the water at a decent 20 - 22 celcius would be handy if you dont have one.

Im no expert as I am only on my first grow but I did lots of reading before hand and once I got my "complete kit" I still needed to whizz out and buy the calibration solutions and water heater.
Have fun, to me it seems a great way to grow and I have had no problems as yet, just make sure you look after the plants and Im sure you will be rewarded.
