Grow Mediums Hempy Write UP

Great thread, ive been tossing around adding a couple DWC buckets to my room, but now I know this is what im going to try. Im new to growing but was crazy about aquariums and it reminds me of deep sand beds. For decades people tried to avoid deep substrate where aerobic bacteria thrived, because when disturbed the bacteria would die and could ruin a system. BUT when done properly to simulate nature it can have amazing results. I think this is probably similar where root rot is a concern, but in nature wetlands often have incredible growth so the plants have obviously figured out how to deal with constant moisture somehow. I cant figure out if im doing this because I love pot or because I love science

Ok gears churning now im in think/tinker mode and prob going to try to setup a couple hempy buckets tomorrow. My question is hole mostly a drain or mostly for air? If its really just a drain, why not put a bulkhead in the hole into a tee vertical with a ball valve on bottom and a clear acrylic tube going up the side of the bucket to the top. This will be the visual water level indicator and to lower the level simply open the ball valve to drain. In my mind it would help to keep water level higher and keep lowering it as the plant grows and also be able to adjust etc. Am I overcomplicating for nothing? The one complaint I see is growth isnt great until roots hit the res at the bottom.

Hey everyone!! I know this is an old post, and this is my first post. I'm an experienced photo grower who uses solely hempy buckets. Running into issues with autos stunting when I put them in their final bucket (once they pop they go directly into 3 gal). I think the wait for the tap to hit res stunts them. But i always heard not to tp autos...any advice?

I haven't had this issue although I've been using Hempys mostly for photo strains and the ones I have grown were in small containers.

Only advice I can think of is maybe switch to straight perlite. Since there will be no verm/coco/whatever wicking agent the tap may shoot down faster to find the water. Watering less will do this as well, I'll usually wait until the res has pretty much dried up. IMO 100% perlites the way to go. Whether or not that solves your issue remains to be seen.

Hope you can get on the right track!

I'm using 100% perlite already. Think using solos to start might help. I'll try smaller starting cups to see...thanks for your help brother!!

use hiezenburg tea and put it @ the base of the plant as a seedling only little amounts of water and again right @ the base of your plant that way you can get that tap root to go down to the res and it will explode in growth in no time

I am having the same problems with 100% perlite hempys and autos (photos love it with their extra veg time). At the moment I am trying 12hr waterings to runoff, trying to get the taproot to the res. I am on day 13 a it hasnt reached yet.
Anyone have any experience in this area

I've narrowed it down to the fact that perlite leaves some air pockets where it slows the root growth down. 100% perlite isn't good as it can create thermal pockets in the medium. Should mix in 1/3 of verm or coco to help with that. I just made the switch to 50:50 coco perlite and will not look back man!! Growth issue solved with the coco staying moist...very fast growth!!

also do you have any grows I could take a look at? I will get this solved as I love Hempys, with photos at least.
