Grow Mediums Hempy Write UP

I've started my hempy project as well. 3 gallon office trash cans, perlite/vermiculite (80/20). And ordered a new tent as well, just need a legit light now and I'm on my way.
Quick question about transplanting hempys. When I remove plant from mini hempy to put into 3 gal, how do i avoid damaging roots?

hey level i use the red plastic beer cups what i do is let the perlite dry out mostly leaving just a little dampness in the cup then simply turn the cup upside down while holding the bottom of the mainstem between two fingers and usually it will slide right out sometimes i will have to gently squeeze the middle section a little so it changes shape of the cup slightly and then it will come out perfect. never have had any roots break or damage this way. also a cpl other things to note. 1.) depending on how long u left them in the cup the roots will either be well developed and totally wrapped around the cup which will hold the perlite into shape very good which means u wont have any of that perlite breaking off as u transplant, or you could transplant when the roots have just hit the bottom of the cup for a cpl days and as u go to transplant the perlite will hold more to the base of say the rockwool if thats what u started in and the bottom will pretty much breakaway without causing root damage. wither way its pretty easily. the reason i brought this fact up is because when i'm doing autos. and starting in cups i like to transplant as soon as i notice they have hit bottom in the cups because otherwise i tend to get real short stunted plants. with photos though i like to leave them in the cup for a little longer and let them build a nice root system in the cup before transplant.

How much time usually passes before you're transplanting? Are you waiting until they sex?

hey mustard no reason for the red its just the color of the pack i pick up lol. u can use any cups u want. poetic i'm assuming your talking autos, with fem autos i would either start in a 12oz plastic cup"i call beer cups" for a wk to ten days once they popped above rockwool or whatever u start ur seeds in or you can go straight to final bucket with the fems. for reg autos if i'm gonna leave them till sex i want to make sure i have a taller cup like a 32oz fountain cup or something along that line. u dont want the tap root of the auto to hit bottom and stay there for to long. or when u go to transplant to final bucket they will usually stay short and stunted, is what i've noticed. now when ur transplanting and not letting the roots wrap around the cup into the perlite when u go to tranplant once u get it to start sliding out the cup the perlite that isnt attached to the roots will come apartand wont hold that interior cup shape but dont worry it wont harm the roots it just kinda crumbles out without tearing everything.

I'm trying out the Osmocote Plus w/ Cal/Mag soon in Hempy Buckets with 100% perlite. From what I've read, there are a couple opinions on dosage with OC+. The package says you can't overfeed them. We'll see what happens. DocBud doesn't recommend flushing. Not sure how exactly I feel about that. Experiments begin!

Doc says:
Surface application for one gallon:
26 grams

Incorporation into the medium:
approx 28 grams

Per the link above:
1tsp=5 grams
1 tbsp=15grams

So, I'd use 2 tbsp's of OC plus in a gallon container.

I like the Lucas formula personally. It's simple and works as long as you don't burn the piss out of your ladies getting overly excited. Though MaxiBloom can be a pain to mix since it's not a liquid.

Going in this order w/ seeds:

1. 1.5" Rockwool until they pop
2. 16oz mini 100% perlite hempy cup (the solo red ones everyone has) since I'm not growing feminized w/ ~1 tsp of OC+.
3. Finally I'll transplant into 2.5 gallon buckets with the appropriate OC+ (looks like 2.5 tbsp) sprinkled a little above the hole in the bucket
4. I'll water daily w/ R/O water pH'd around the 5.8-6.0 range with Cal/Mag added until they hit the reservoir and then pull back a little and let the bucket get fairly dry before watering again.

I plan (as always) to let the ladies show me what they need. More water, less water, different light height, etc. I'm getting to the bottom of this nutrient method one way or another :toke: If it works the way it's supposed to, this may just be the definitive KISS method for a smaller space. I'm excited and optimistic. I'll keep everyone updated on progress to see how this goes.

UPDATE:

They're going strong right now with OC+. The two transplanted gals have found a new, happy home in larger buckets. I have zero complaints. This sure makes the process easier. I've seen the grows using it, but I still am at a loss for words. I'm only feeding pH'd, oxygenated R/O water with cal/mag. The nutrients are already mixed in the perlite. It's so simple.

I have been using old 1ltr nutrient bottles with tops cut off as hempy containers...also 500ml and 1ltr plastic vitamin containers.....almost any plastic container can be used if it's cleaned well enough...
A mix of fine coir and chunky mulch coir is good....soak and flush the chunky mulch coir first to remove salts to be sure of good growth...I add fast acting garden lime and some epsom salts to the coir a few weeks before using the coir to 'buffer' it [or Dolomite is a mix of calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate (MgCO3). It is especially good if your soil also needs magnesium (as well as lime) ] and prepare it for use....so far it seems to be working well...
I came up with a method using 10ltr plastic water bottles as hempy pots...when done well they work effectively, but have found the width of them does not give much support if you move the pots often...
Rotate the bottle so the pour hole is at the bottom, then cut a hole in what is now the 'top' of the bottlepot

My next experiment with them will be laying the bottlepot on their 'side' so there is a lower, wider footprint, but more side support for the roots.....

my hempy-dripper

Hi guys,

as there was some interest in my setup, I'll post it here once more in some more detail.

It is simply a kind of hempy, within another reservoir-container provided with a homemade dripping system.

The basis is an airpot, without bottom, completely filled with perlite (the cheap isoself stuff).
This is stacked into another bucket, just as an enclosure and to keep a little reservoir on the bottom for the roots to feed (approx 3l - 3cm up from the bottom) , once they reach the bottom - the main-idea of the hempy bucket.
The airpot inside is just to promote root growth a little more and get more air to the roots so I don't need a bubbler anymore.

So this then is put inside another bucket, lifted at a decent hight to hold some more solution (another 3-6l), so one can leave it for some days unmaintained.

This gives me the ability to do a laid back grow like in a wilma, but I can react to every plants individual needs, because they have all their own reservoirs.

In the beginning the dripper runs more frequently, to keep the lil babies moist, when the roots reach the res and growth goes *boom* the inner res will just be filled up once or twice a day via timer, just how they need it.

So here are two pics to show some detail

airpot in bucket -> stack into another bucket with some lifting "spacers" (plastic cups cut evenly to 4cm height) -> ready for the jiffies to be placed into

The result of my test-run with one dinafem white cheese did proove it OK ...at least for me :)

Cheers
