How's it going, eh? I just took the plunge and finally bought a tent. Been growing since 1986, the first time with 2 4 ft fluorescent fixtures, moved up to a hoop house in 1990 when l bought a house. Grew happily for 15 years until the X & l split up & she flushed all my acclimatized genetics down the crapper... l haven't grown indoors before other than seedlings and the home l'm living in Haas a not so great climate for photo plants. Hard frosts 1st week of September. I got 12 plants going at the moment, 5 'kif Ketama' l got from Bama Seeds off the French eBay. I stumbled upon the beans looking for a new to me double edge razor. I bought 25 and gave some to like minded friends to try. 3 bagseeds of 1 type and 4 of another. I plan to veg them on the deck and switch them to 12 12 when l tent them. I'm hoping to get a Moroccan male to have his way with the lady plants this grow. There are links for Bama Seeds genetics on their Twitter page. Look for 'BamaSeeds' there. To turn the French eBay page link to a Canadian or American eBay page ya gotta go to the start of the web address and change the ".fr" part of the address to a ".com" for Americans or a ".ca" for Canadians and *boom* you can order them if you have an eBay account. @Growtogrow I got a 1000w MH l bought in 2016 and haven't even tried yet, l bought it off a older dude for $70 with a spare bulb, he said it was his son's gear & a 150x150x200 tent coming. Need the ventilation & filter next on shopping list on pay the bills day,eh?

1000w mh wow.... Good to veg with. But isn't very efficient at power to useful light for photosynthesis. But will get your grow off the ground. Magnetic ballast or digital?

I started out with a1000 watt MH/HPS magnetic ballast bought in a second hand store with a hood. I paid like 220 bucks came with three HPS bulbs 1000w

One of my first inside legal crop back in 2014. You can tell it's a magnetic ballast from the lines that are in the picture.

Grrrr... just dug the ballast out after 4 years. No cover... Mickey Mouse electrical tape connecting wires, etc. I guess l need a new magnetic ballast b4 the ventilation stuff. *sigh* play Led Zepellin "Nobody's Fault But Mine" for me por favor.

Well I was going to suggest that you update your lighting very soon anyways and sounds like you're going to have to real soon. There's a couple good ways to go with these days. If you got the money LEDs and probably one of the best ways to go there's some really expensive stuff out there though but it's good stuff cool white led light and far red LEDs.
Will cost you but will last a good 5 plus year's.
Or
315 CMH, (ceramic metal halide,) also known as LEC, (light emitting ceramic)
Start up cost on a CMH light is around 175 to expensive if you want to go high 500 could be with light ballast reflector and light bulb included.
For the start-up cost is about $200 less than a good equal LED light.

I use 315 CMH lights I'm a do-it-yourselfer. I build a lot of my own reflectors. I just built one yesterday for my outside grow.
I put over a single plant today.
I'm trying my research out. I'm researching far red LEDs 730 to 780 micro modules.
I'm experimenting with light recipes.

I would try to go to the second hand store to try and find what you need to start with.. maybe on Craigslist too.

About a year ago I sold 4 iPower 600w hps digitale ballasts for 50 bucks a piece. When I went full cmh

l am leaning towards a 'Sun System Magnetic Trifeca' kit, it comes with a 1000w switchable ballast & a 'bat wing' reflector and a HPS bulb. I can then use the MH bulbs l got as needed during the future cycles. It's prices are all over the place, but l found a cheaper source in a B.C. gardening site that'll ship to me and address any issues l may have. The ventilation & filter will have to wait for a little while yet, eh?
