Well I guess I was a little too quick saying there weren't any codes on the seeds. So if we have a staff member Maybe @sanguine who can check these out with the rep I'd be really interested to know if these are pull dated.

Because honestly unless we get a rep come back and say these are old, there's no way I'll ever buy any heavyweight seeds absolutely not.

Here's an interesting quote from a heavyweight seeds rep to seedsman.

"When we breed, we use extreme germination methods. We put the seeds in places where humidity and temperature variables are adaptable, forcing them to germinate in poor conditions,"

Hey @jingo brother, i havnt been following this battle- need to have a browse through.
Who all is having germ issues?
Was it @Duggy that sent you the tester beans maybe he knows a bit more
It appears that about half of us are having some germination issues. At least 50% failure or worse.

Germination Log:

Strain: High Density, 1 seed, Method: root riot, 100% germination, @St. Tom

Strain: 2 Fast 2 Vast, 2 seeds, Method: root riot, 100% germination, @St. Tom

Strain: Fruit Punch, 4 seeds, Method: 24 hr soak, then paper towel, 25% germination, @Arthur

Strain: Monster Profit, 4 seeds, Method: direct plant into rock wool, 100% germination. @Mañ'O'Green

Strain: Massive Midget, 1 seed, Method: planted in root riot and straight in the main pot. 100% germination. @Ripper

Strain: Turbo Bud Auto, 5 seeds, Method: paper towel method, 0% germination, @islandgrower

Strain: Jackpot Auto, 4 seeds, Method: 24 hr soak then direct into soil, 75% germination, @Maria Sanchez

Strain: Strawberry Cake Photo, 4 seeds, Method: 24 hr soak then direct into soil, 100% germination, @Maria Sanchez

Strain: Skunky Monkey, 8 seeds so far Method: soak 24-36 to coco 3 seeds no sprout, Soak 24 to paper towel, 2 of 5 cracked tail one made it above Coco. 12.5% unless the one that cracked makes it above Coco it will be 25% Jingo

Strain: <your strain>, <number of seeds> seeds, Method: <method used>, <percent successful germ>% germination. @<grower name>

Thanks @Maria Sanchez for reorganizing this. @Dudeski @jingo the actual numbers so far are 10 out of 26 seeds have germinated or about 40% but the numbers are skewed by three poor performing strains Skunky Monkey and Turbo Bud followed by the Fruit Punch. The germination problems are strain dependant. The source does not seem relevant. This is a small sample and hard to assign future outcomes but it is a disturbing trend.

There is a statistically significant pattern to the germinating methods but this is really too small a sample to extrapolate data from that. I might add that over the years I have given up on the paper towel method not because of failures but overall plant growth is better for me just planting into the medium. I only soak seeds that are over seven years old. and then only for 12 hours after lightly scuffing the outer shell on 600 grit sandpaper.

Yes I agree . In my case the paper towel worked for another seed in the same container . The seeds that cracked popped a little and just quit . No more growth so maybe they were older stock not sure would have to ask @Duggy they were a prize from the outdoor comp last year.

I've never used sandpaper, but a good soak and straight in the pots has always worked best for me. I try to think how they work in nature, straight to soil
99.9% of my seed germinating experience is with vegetables and flowers. At one point in time I had a 2 acre truck farm and first to the market is the big winner. an early crop could mean huge profits. Consequently I was germinating early in a hot house and transplanting to the field. I tried many many methods and here is my take away from that experience - Anything that exposes the tap root will cause a loss in final performance/yield. Rapid rooter, Jiffy pot types work well if your timing is good (tap root not exposed before planting). Nothing beats the performance of seed planted directly in the field into living soil warmed to the proper temperature for the plant type. Even a lesser yield from poor germinating methods that got to market a week earlier than the competition brought home the bacon!
