Indoor Hardon's First AFN Grow - Fast Buds West Coast OG GLR SCROG

Nice grow! I like the SOG method I might do that at some point. I am getting ready to do the same strain from the same vendor. I know in the fast buds description the mention to give the plenty of light and extra nutrients more than you are used giving them so drilling them with nutrients is something they can take. I will be using a 4x4 tent with a 600 watt hps and two 35 watt led's and I am only doing 3 in 5 gal pots being this is my first auto grow and pretty much my first grow overall. Fast Buds also noted that this strain tends to be very stinky especially towards the end of flowering. Will be sure to check your grow out it should be a good show!

Thanks!

Sounds like a nice set-up you have. Why you only doing 3? Seems like you have ample space and enough lighting to get 4 in there easy. And man they really stink! Had to order up a new filter as my current one just isn't coping!

Good luck on the grow man, they've been a great plant to grow so far. Get a diary posted so we can see how you go...

Cheers,
Hardon

Nice Scrog bro have you thought about covering your tent with some thick blankets to help with the heat when lights out just a thought. Keep up the great work bro.

Thanks Fairly! It has gotten even colder around here in the past couple of days so I'm now looking at all available options as even lights on temps are starting to be affected now. I was thinking yesterday about buying a king size duvet and draping it over the tent. Figured it would be cheaper in the long run than running yet another heater...

I definitely need to do something. The temps outside the tent are at 7 degrees and I noticed tonight that the temps at the top of the pots was 11 degrees :eek1: Drastic action is required!

Thanks for dropping in!

Regarding, "What I think I need is a thermostatic fan heater..."

I use a Lux WIN100 programmable electrical outlet thermostat to control my fan. For example, see www.amazon.com/Lux-Heating-Cooling-Programmable-Thermostat/dp/B000E7NYY8. I set it so it turns on its electrical outlet (run fans or whatever) when the temp. reaches 80˚F and it turns off at 79˚F (you can set the range, here just 1 degree, that you allow temp. swings). But because it obviously is designed to remain on for minimally a few minutes (can't have heaters and air conditioners going off-one multiple times per minute), it runs a few minutes and when it stops its 2 degrees cooler, 78˚F. The unit allows for different temp. settings day and night of each day of the week, etc. But I just run it in manual, with my tent going 24 x 7, as a normal thermostat without using any timer functions.

Cheers for the write up dude! I saw those thermostat plugs before and the only issue with them was I don't have any sockets inside my tent. If they made it with the sensor on the end of a wire it would be ideal. Thanks for reminding me about these though as they will be ideal for my DR90 which I'm investing in very soon.

Hardon

I use a oil heater right in the tent did you think about one a small 750 watt one hardly takes up room it is great for controlling temps in the winter my basement in my grow area can get cold I draw a certain amount of outside air in and it needs to be heated. A king size duvet will help a lot for sure

Thanks!

I like the setup very much so far and I haven't even fired it up:) I am going to start on the 25th of this month, the reason being is that I am on a very tight budget. It took me awhile to save,at first I was going with a smaller version it was a 2x4 tent with a 400w and no leds. I saw the setup I have for another 150.00 and went with that, that 150.00 was to cover nutes, soil, smart pots,ph meter, and seeds so that left me only enough to get three seeds after that it will get filled with the max amount. I get paid once a month so I had to wait until the 25th of this month. Bummer thing is I got my tent and beans on the same day so it made the wait just even harder. That's my long answer:) It just so happens that my next door neighbor is looking for some medical marijuana. She is going to buy the seed and I will grow it for her so I will have the opportunity to do the 4 this run,I am doing a Seedsman strain Bubble Gom for her. I love the stench of growing weed ,natures perfume:) that's crazy that you had to get a new filter. It will be good doing four so I can see if five will fit but I will be happy with four. I will post a diary starting on Black Friday! Also Happy Thanksgiving and I will continue to keep an eye on your Girlscouts:slap:

You seem to be presuming that the unit must be plugged into a wall outlet. That would make it rather useless for most everybody.

I don't see any problems. Put the unit near what it's controlling, and plug that stuff directly into the unit's thermostat-controlled outlet. In my case, the thermostat/switch/outlet unit is within the tent, hanging above the lights, with it plugged into an extension cord coming into the tent and my exhaust/filter fan plugged into the unit..

Day Thirty Eight Update

(I had a full update typed up for Day 34 but (as you'll soon see) I've been so busy that I couldn't get it posted in time)

The last few days have been nothing short of a total fucking disaster! A pipe in my house started leaking and I had to get a plumber out to sort it. Knowing he would need into the loft, I had to pack everything away temporarily. This meant having to untangle all four of them from the screen which was nothing short of a fucking nightmare and stash them all away in a cupboard until he was done. Once I got everything set-up again, trying to re-insert the screen without snapping branches was just impossible! Then once I got everything set back up again, the pissing leak re-appeared so I once again had to call the dickhead plumber out and pack everything away again!

I suppose being stashed in a cupboard for a couple of days was a treat for them as it was at least warm. Back up in the loft, the battle against the temps has been a losing one all week. We've had an average of 12 degrees during lights off. This was with a duvet wrapped around the tent, the second tube heater installed and a heater at the intake. The effect of the cold was really starting to show as the growth rate was way off where it should be and the yellowing of the leaves at the bud sites had gotten worse. I've seen this yellowing before and it has to do with the temperature difference between lights off and lights on being too great (in my case a 13 degree difference!). It is probably compounded with a bit of heat/light stress as I have to keep the lamp as close as I can to keep the temps in the mid 20's.

Then things took another turn for the worse...

This was the absolute final straw for me so I went ahead and ordered up a new DS90 which arrived yesterday...

I stuck the tube heaters and a blow heater inside the tent and the temps today were 19.4 during lights off  I have a bit of scope with the blow heater as I'm only running it at 40% so we should be able to cope when it gets even colder around here. Big thanks to everyone who chipped in with ideas on how to solve the temps issues! This is the third loft I've grown in and is by far the coldest! The extra floor space has made all the difference so hopefully that is the temps saga now sorted...

With the screen gone, I've had to resort to some LST and a little super cropping to keep the canopy level in check. The growth rate has been way off where it should be but hopefully now they will start moving in the right direction again. They were fed on Day 34 with 5ml Bloom (BioBizz), 2ml Booster, 1ml Cal-Mag and 1tsp Molasses. They were fed again today with 5ml Bloom, 2ml Booster, 1ml Silicon, 1ml Cal-Mag (1.5ml for #1 to address a mag def) and 1ml Superthrive.

On the subject of nutes, I'm not overly impressed with Plant Magic so far. I know conditions in the tent haven't been ideal whatsoever but from all the research I done I was expecting a little more from it. I've stopped using the Bloom as the PK ratio is utter shite but will see out this grow with the rest of the range. After that, it will be relegated to feeding the strawberry and tomato plants in the greenhouse

I can't even begin to tell you how disappointed I am with how this run has gone so far. We got off to a great start but it's been downhill ever since and the past week has been a major kick in the balls! Although we now have all the issues sorted, the damage has been done in many respects. This is not how I wanted my first AFN grow to go at all but hopefully now the temps are sorted, things should start looking up. I think they'll still be good for 2oz each which all things considered will be a great result.

Thanks for dropping in!

Cheers,
Hardon

That sounds like one hell of a rough week, lesser men would have given up, kudos to you for persevering. I'm glad you've got everything setup in your new tent with temps in a good range, at least you won't have the same problem next grow. Must be nice to move out of that shack into a bigger house
