Growing the male

I use my supersoil mix for my males but do not use the foliar spray and additional nutrients that I add to my fems. If im collecting pollen I will star males at the same time as females but if im doing air pollination I like to start the males a week later. That gives the females more time to grow larger buds to hold more seeds.

That's a good idea. I usually pick off the first ball sacks for a week or two, but that's a pain in the ass.

Anyone know if using pollen that's released later will help the offspring have a longer veg time? I've heard that using the first pollen released can make offspring flower faster. It may only be a subtle difference, but I've never had the space to test this for myself.

I havent found that to be true. I have made seeds with pollen from a 16 day old male and it did not help speed up the lifecyle of the F1.

Potency is #1 smoke your males, it might be minimal but test your males for potency...Nip the tippy top first thing in the morning when you have not smoked a bit and see if you feel anything if you do you got a purrdy good papa.

How far away do you have to keep you breeding area/males from your main fem growing area, and what precautions do you have to take to insure rogue pollen isn't flying around to to hit your main grow area?

In both my personal and professional grows I keep males in a separate room from any plant I dont want pollinated.
In my personal grows I just have normal ventilation and am careful not to knock pollen around much.
In my professional grows we have mini HEPA filters in each room. Also scrub down the entire room and equipment before swapping strains. We dont want any stray pollen

A piece of information you rarely see anyone mention and of utmost importance in my opinion. Everyone always like to be so picky over females but the male is as important, if not more.

Nice tip GA6!

When breeding do the male genetics affect certain traits over female genetics? Does it mater which part of a cross is male or female?

Same traits that you want to pass on, speed of development, leafiness, shape, branching, etc....

The male is half the genetics. Most growers dont bother properly grow out the male to even see if it has the traits they want. If you select a weak sketchy male that what your going to end up with. Weak babies. Short male....short offspring. Big stout strong male plant....same with the offspring.

Smell, smell, smell. Rub the leaves constantly and smell your fingers. Of course, every other aspect that Grey Bear and Bromeo mentioned.

The second question, I am not read enough on Mendel to answer that question with certainty but I believe it almost exactly the same as female as Bromeo stated.
