This thread is on growing the male cannabis plant for breeding purposes. We all know the female gets all the attention, but there is little on growing and picking a good male. So if you are wanting to get into breeding, this is the place to ask!!

Does the male work on the same light schedule of 20 on and 4 off?

Does the male require both veg and flower nutrients to produce pollen?

For autos,
Yes they like it the same, for light
They don't require it, but the healthier the male the larger the plant = more pollen, big healthy males..big healthy loads.

I've always wanted to breed my own but have no idea how to get started lol. For example say I want a sour diesel taste and a light purple frosty color that's an autoflower sativa. For stock I have a nyc diesel, grandaddy purp, and say lowryder. I would choose the smelliest and darkest of the male gdp, the frostiest and most tasty female nycd, then cross the two.

Then I take the best smelling/darkest first generation male and cross it with a lowryder female. Then again choose the best smelling male and most sativa like structure female and inbreed them. Would this next gen have the auto gene? Sorry don't mean to hijack just trying to wrap my head around this.

I've found that males will flower about the same as females of the same strain. With similar light cycles and in similar time frame.

My males seem happiest when I give them a mix of grow and bloom. I've noticed the same for my pregnant ladies.

But I'm just a home/hobby breeder for my own personal fun. I would love to hear some experts opinions and experiences.

To get to auto you take your best smelling/darkest SDxGDP male and cross it with a lowryder female. Their children will be photoperiods. Take two of those children photoperiods and breed them together and you will get about 25% auto children. Take two of those auto children and breed them together for full autoflowering. Now take that autoflower you created and use it in place of the lowryder to get even more characteristics of the SDxGDP. At least that's how I've understood it from reading on here. I have no experience other than dusting my Tyrone Special female auto with Grape Stomper OG photoperiod male pollen.

Thanks for the explanation.. very intereisting stuff. I'm on research mode now thanks to this thread hehe I've got a spare tent and light, will put it to good use.

I use my supersoil mix for my males but do not use the foliar spray and additional nutrients that I add to my fems. If im collecting pollen I will star males at the same time as females but if im doing air pollination I like to start the males a week later. That gives the females more time to grow larger buds to hold more seeds.

Mmmmm, this is my idea of a delicious thread! Subbed :)

If you all have questions, ask away!!! There are plenty of breeders here to ask away about the male plant!!

Do you give the male plant veg and bloom nutrients?

My male get nutrients but not any more then they need to be healthy. during veg give N and P/K for the beginning of bloom.
I like supersoil because the plant takes what it needs and when I pick the best male I know im getting the best genetics for a strong healthy plant and not a chemmed up "steroid" plant. Nothing against chems.
